Painful mouth ulcer

Hi, I’m 17w pregnant and developed a huge ulcer on my tongue, almost 1cm big. My mouth is in agony, can barely speak, drink water, barely eaten anything today, took almost 30min to eat a toast and it was extremely painful. I almost cried with every mouthful. I have anbesol gel, Iglu gel and aliclair plus gel but took them to a pharmacy and they don’t recommend to use as no studies how would it effect pregnancy.
Does anyone know what I can use, I’m in so much pain. Tried salt water gaggles but it doesn’t help much. Thank you.

I use Corsodyl mouthwash to help clear up ulcers quickly when I have them. There is an alcohol free version. It probably won’t do much to help you today but you should notice a difference soon.

Instead of eating something rough like toast maybe try something cool and soft like a smoothie or yogurt?

I suffer ulcers too and I just keep doing the salt water a couple of times a day and corsadyl morning and night

Thank you. I’ll get some corsadyl this morning, can barely swallow.

My DH gets terrible mouth ulcers. He finds only Orajel (20% strength) helps - it's a local anaesthetic and its strong. Check with your GP, or try 111 lots of drugs might be of limits on paper, but it's due to lack of studies rather than any known harmful effects for use in pregnancy. Ulcers are miserable, but hopefully won't be around for long 🤞

I get mouth ulcers such a lot, always have done. The only thing that works for me is vitamin B complex. I chew on the tablet near the ulcer (it's not really meant for chewing so tastes a bit weird) and the ulcer goes away sooner - a couple of days with vit B, vs a few weeks without. It's safe during pregnancy. Worth a go!

Might be worth getting your iron levels checked. Gengigel mouthwash is much more gentle than corsodyl. It must be miserable for you. Echo the B vitamins recommendations.

Hi OP, I could have written the exact same post a week ago! Massive ulcer on the left side of tongue. I bought some alcohol free corsodyl mouthwash which is safe in pregnancy. It stopped hurting within 2 days of using it.

Thank you all. I’ve been doing salt water gaggles and got corsodyl alcohol free yest morning and it improved tiny bit, still very sore but can at least swallow some water and some clear soup without crying. Will try to get some vit b too, I used to take pregnacare vitamins which contain vit b I think but they constipate me (tmi , sorry) to the extreme which causes other issues.
