Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone could give me their previous experiences and how they got on with sweeps? (Membrane)

I’m due to have one in 4 weeks time at 37 weeks pregnant due to being high risk. I just wanted to manage my expectations on them and see everyone’s experiences. I know no one and not one pregnancy is the same but would Be nice to hear some stories and advice. Especially not knowing what to expect!

I will be having a sweep at 37,38 and 39 weeks until I am induced at 40 weeks.

thanks l so much in advance xxx

I’m 38+6 and went for my first sweep on Thursday but the midwife was unable to do it as baby wasn’t low enough.
Not overly helpful but worth mentioning as I thought they could do a sweep regardless of where baby is.

I had sweeps last Friday and yesterday! I’m 40 weeks exactly today and have had absolutely nothing! I am 1cm dilated my cervix is shortening but still hard. Baby Is in perfect position and Bishop score is 6. Being induced 8am Monday and they said they expect me to deliver Wednesday!

Super stressful but everyone’s different you could go in your first sweep or may need induced like me. We are high risk too hence the 40 week induction. I’ll update the thread with how we get on x

@HorseMum91 aw really, did it have no effect at all for you? I think they say the culmative effect of a few sweeps is what helps but goodness knows!

Yeh for sure i thought they would be able to do a sweep not mattering about baby’s position? I know they are head down - have been for months it’s just like you say if they’re ready and you’re ready!

How are you getting on now? Xxx

@NaomiSophia eeeeek how exciting!! Wow how are you feeling?? Well I would imagine a variety of emotions!!!

So exciting! I don’t know what a Bishop score is?? But good that your cervix is at least 1cm though hey. Aw I really hope everything goes well for you lovely and thanks for your advice. xxxx

40 weeks today here. Had a sweep on Wednesday and began having light contractions that evening. Midwife says ik 2cm, she can feel baby's head, cervix very soft etc. Went to bed early getting prepped for the labour that I thought was ahead.... and woke up to nothing!! And nothing really since.

Very surprised as I had one with DD1 and went into labour a day or so afterwards.

I'll be having another one on Thursday if I'm still pregnant!

crisps88 · 16/02/2020 21:58

@LolaLollypop wow how crazy that you were 2cm after it. That’s brill news but yeh it’s crazy that it’s nothing after it !!!

Especially going to bed with them how mad! Tell you what this labour is madness! Is it 3 or 4cm they take you in?

How far were you when you had a sweep with your daughter? Xxx

Hi @crisps88, I had a sweep on my due date, so exactly 40 weeks. At the time, the midwife said my cervix was 1cm dilated and that she was able to perform a "good sweep" i.e. sweep the membranes completely away with her finger.

I had mine at 10am Thursday morning. By the afternoon, I was experiencing light stomach cramps (like mild period pains). By 2am Friday morning, my contractions had started. I went into hospital 12am Saturday morning when I was finally 4cm dilated and my contractions were close enough together. I gave birth 10:30am Saturday morning.

I hope your sweep goes well. It was an uncomfortable procedure but it's over quickly. The 34 hour labour, however, slightly dragged its heels 😬

crisps88 · 17/02/2020 12:53

@PearlHeart3 34 hours wow what a trooper you are !!!!! That’s a long time you poor thing! Of course I know everyone says all worth it but it just sounds so long !

Aw thank you, I don’t have much hope for the 37 week one not the next one but I’m hoping then culmative effect may bring me in. Goodness knows!

Wow sounds like it helped that’s good isn’t it, it just appears to depend on how the cervix is I suppose. Never know they might not even be able to do it come 37 if they can’t get inside 😬🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️😂

Thanks for your advice lovely and your detail really helps 🥰🥰 XXxx
