Dilated kidneys at 20 wks

I had my 20 week scan this morning and was told that everything seems ok but that my baby has dilated kidneys. The bladder seems to be working ok and fluid around the baby is fine too but I have to go back in a week for a scan with the consultant. The kidneys are just not draining as quickly as they should and they think that it could be because of a blockage or a kink in one of the tubes or that one of the kidneys is just not working. Does anyone have experience of this? I am terrified.

I have just done a search to try and find some of my old threads as this may have been what my son had. I can't remember as he is now 2 but he had 2 markers but all turned out fine. I hope it does for you too.

Hi. This exact thing happened to us too. It is scary, but from what I can remember (nearly 5 yrs ago now)it is not unusual and the problem often rights itself.

For us, it meant far more frequent scans throughout pregnancy just to keep an eye on it, and when he was born we had to go to hospital when he was a few days old to check he was weeing properly.

I'll see if I can find the stuff we looked up at the time.

Obviously I am no professional, and every case is unique but we were told not to worry, and you should do the same. Try not to worry too much and your next scan should hopefully put your mind at rest and give you more information.

we had the same prob at about the same time sweetheart, we were referred dor another scan and the consultant at the time said it was probably because she was due a wee when they did the first scan. she then emptied her bladder while they were checking on the 2nd scan. it is terrifying tho (((((((((((((spanna07)))))))))))))))))

I have a colleague whose ds had exactly the same thing (not sure if both kidneys or just one), but it was fine after birth. Just meant more scans and staying a bit longer in hospital for an ultrasound

don't panic - do a search on mn as there have been a couple of other threads on this and all of them positive

we had this at 20 wks with ds and the follow up scan at 34 wks showed he still had enlarged kidneys. Once ds was born he had to have anti biotics for 6 wks (I had a 6 hour discharge and prescription wasn't ready so dh went back that evening to pick it up) just as 6 week ab's were finishing we took him for an ultrasound and his kidneys were fine, I know another mum from antenatal and she had same thing with her little girl that turned out to be fine.
Some others on here have had to take lo's for surgery but I think its always been a relatively straight forward experience - be reassured that its not uncommon to pick it up in pg and every scan is only a snap shot and if it is an issue at least they can make sure the doc is on standby after the birth to do a full check

Try to to worry too much - if it helps get a list of questions ready for next scan and hopefully they'll give you all the info you need

ps ds was born last may and I used to give him loads of nappy off time in the hot weather leading up to his ultrasound which I also found reassuring as I could see he was peeing fine!

Thanks for all your advice on this. It is appreciated SO MUCH and I am starting to feel better. I think I was just in a bit of shock this morning- it's my second pg and I sailed through the first one so never expected any problems- a bit naive, I know.
Thanks again.

i had this with ds1, had further scans which showed what they called renal pelvic dilatation? if i remember rightly, he had to have antibiotics after birth and further scans until when he was 3 or 4mths old the problem resolved itself, no idea why we went for a scan, he had a big wee all over the scanning person and then everything measured normal. he had one more follow up scan and has been fine ever since.
