Hi, I've just found out I am around 4 weeks pregnant with my first... just wondered if there's any benefit of having an appointment with my GP before self referral to antenatal? Just want to make sure I'm not missing out on any tests etc. Thanks x

No need to see GP at all in pregnancy unless your poorly. Some area you self refer and some it's done via midwife at GP surgery so might just be worth checking the process for your area.

Booking in is usually around weeks 8--10

You wont miss out on any tests. In my (limited) experience, GP's dont seem to be that interested! They just tell you to speak to midwife at booking appointment, unless you have specific concerns around medication you are taking or something. Even then the GP just spoke to me on the phone! The tests dont happen until after the booking appointment (which in my area midwife will only see you at 8+ weeks).

No need to go to your GP. Do you know which hospital you want to have services from? Most have information about self referral on their website. Just go ahead and let the maternity service know that you are pregnant. Ideally your first appointment with the midwife would be around 8 weeks, with first scan at about 12 weeks. First tests will be discussed and offered at the first midwife appointment. Congratulations!

It's not even an option in my area, didn't get past the gp receptionist, just given the telephone number to self refer

Call your surgery and check. My surgery won't give you an appointment with the midwife until you've seen the gp. I thought it was a bit odd as I am a student midwife in a different area and none of those gp's would see you, they'd send you straight to the midwife. My gp did pick up an undiagnosed heart murmur at that appointment so was quite good really Smile
