Retained placenta - scared to try for 2nd baby

My DH and I are thinking of trying for baby no. 2 and I really want another baby however I'm terrified of having a retained placenta.

When my son was born I suffered with a retained placenta. I had a managed 3rd stage, a cathertar inserted, tried breast feeding with no luck. After half an hour they tried cord traction which was horrific and feels like someone is trying to pull your insides out. After 45 mins I was told I would have to go to theater to have to manually removes if it hadn't come away in the 60 minute window. At 58 minutes it finally came away with lots of pulling and so much pain. The whole experiance was so much worse than the birth.

I missed the first hour of my child's like as I was too scared to hold him as I was still so hazy on gas and air as pain relief for the controlled cord traction.

I know I'm at a greater risk of this happening again with future pregnancies I'm terrified that the same will happen again and its putting me off having any further children. Does anyone have any positive stories of a 2nd birth after having a retained placenta?

No experience yet but I had pretty much exactly the same thing happen. After a wonderful labour and birth it was horrible going through all of that afterwards. It does play on my mind a little but I'm sort of glad I know what might happen. With my little boy I was always more worried about after the birth than the birth itself so I feel like now I at least know what to expect. Try to be reassured that you'll be well looked after and it's such a small part of the whole pregnancy/birth/newborn stage. The midwives will also be aware of your history so may encourage trying to move things along more quickly next time. I've just found out I'm very newly pregnant with my second so obviously didn't put me off!
