Bleeding after sweep

I'm 39+3 and just been to midwife appointment. She started a sweep but said that she could feel "bulging membranes" already so didn't need to continue. She said to expect a bit of bleeding but I've just come home and gone to the loo and literally the bowl was bright red. Is that normal? I was expecting just a little bit??

Hi,

The cervix can bleed due to stimulation or even cervical changes (dilation) if she has swept you.
If you’re bleeding fresh red blood please call your maternity unit and let them know. Keep a pad on and keep an eye on baby movements.
If you’re really concerned you can always go in for a reassurance check? x

Thanks @MrsLaura89 - I think I'm going to give it half an hour and then call them if no better as it's heavy enough to be like a period and definitely not spotting

Hi, I didn’t have a sweep but I did wake up at 40+5 with bright red blood pouring out. I rung the labour ward and they said come straight in, as it turns out I didn’t have time to get there as he was suddenly born 10 minutes later. I’d ring them just to be on the safe side.

Heavy bleeding like that is not normal after a sweep, I would ring labour ward now

Hotpinkangel19 · 10/02/2020 17:32

I've had sweeps with 2 babies and never bled like that, definitely call for advice!

MrsLaura89 · 10/02/2020 17:36

Oh it should not be that heavy! Please call your unit ASAP x

Thanks everyone. I called and was advised to come in after I passed two large clots. Everything seems fine but apparently my waters are bulging and I'm 3cm so being admitted and if waters haven't gone by morning they will break them. 😳😳

Glad everything is ok now OP! Get bouncing on a ball, hopefully you labour tonight Smile

Good luck!

DecemberSnow · 11/02/2020 00:06

Glad you went in !!

I was hoping to get some rest as there's only me and one other woman on the ward but she's just decided to start playing recordings of some kind of prayer chants. Bang goes that idea 🙄

Good luck op hope you managed to rest eventually!

Well had a somewhat eventful day! They went to manually break my waters and all hell broke loose as the cord was prolapsed so I was rushed into theatre for an emergency section. Thankfully all went well - baby had a little trouble breathing so he's in NICU but he's going to be fine. So grateful to the NHS staff today, they were amazing!
