Referred for early scan - red blood last night - need a hand hold

Hi there,

I'm really panicking. I'm 8 weeks and last night on my way to my night course I started noticing cramps and a slightly wet feeling. I went straight the bathroom once I arrived and although no marks on my pants whenever I wiped there was bright red blood.

I instantly panicked and flustered around trying to figure out who to call because I didn't know! Ended up getting the number for the emergency pregnancy unit and the lady just took my details and tried to calm me down, said to monitor it and not to come in unless it was filling up pads.

Luckily that was the end of it and no more red blood since. But I received a call this morning from the early pregnancy unit asking me to come in for a scan tomorrow morning. I am RIDDLED with the fear now.

I've been spotting, very light brown, for the last 2-3 weeks with on/off cramping and then that last night happened. But again, no red blood since.

Has anyone had a similar experience? OR has anyone had an early internal scan? - how long does it last, is it worse than a smear? Can you actually see anything at 7-8 weeks? How will I cope if its bad news? :(

I'm 25 and this is my first pregnancy - wee surprise one too at that. So it's been an emotional roller-coaster!

I hope everything goes well for you tomorrow. I know it is easier said than done, but please try not to worry too much. Sending hugs your way!

I've had the same thing, currently 11w. From week 5 had spotting and week 8 had a big bright red bleed. Went for a scan and bubba was there wriggling around and fine. I've been spotting ever since but not bright red. I know it's so scary, so holding your hand in spirit. We came to terms that we'd lost the baby, but hopefully get to see it again on Friday. Good luck with everything x

@Amichelle84

I'm so glad that it was good news for you, gives me a bit of hope! I wish you all the best for Friday too, let me know how you get on x

What was the scan like? Did it last very long? Was it similar to the discomfort of a smear?

Thank you x

They sit with you and ask you some questions the scan itself was a few minutes, and they said everything was ok quite quickly. They understand that it's a stressful time. They then sat with me and discussed the results and what to do if it happened again. It wasnt painful, less painful than a smear.

Has the heavy bleeding stopped? Are you having to use a pad and change it often? x

stardust40 · 04/02/2020 11:19

Hi there, I had similar with dd2. Everything turned out ok x they didn't do an internal scan as they could see her through a normal one...she was 8wks at the time. Good luck xx

I had an internal scan, no worse than a smear, in fact I would say better because there is no trying to scrape your cervix. It took a few minutes, the sonographer was very professional and I had a some big bits of blue paper roll over me so I didn't feel too exposed. They could see what they needed and this was at 6 weeks. I did have to wait around quite a while for the appointment and they came and explained the results after. Fingers crossed its good news for you.

@Amichelle84

Great this really helps. Did you get a wee picture? OR does this not happen at this stage?

It only happened once last night, and it was only on the toilet roll. Light brown spotting on the pad afterwards. But nothing heavy!

It sounds like what happened to me but everyone is different so I dont want to give you false hope.

They did give us a picture, they said they dont usually but they were so ecstatic for us they did.

DreamingOfSummerDays · 04/02/2020 11:58

I had a LOT of bright red bleeding at 10 weeks. Huge gush. Was like a slow tap. (At 8 weeks I had a smaller brown bleed). Was convinced that was the end of the pregnancy. Due to the amount of blood. Was scanned a few days later. All was okay. Baby is now 6 months old and asleep on my lap.

RaachelMorrow · 04/02/2020 12:37

Thank you everyone, this has really helped settle me a bit. I almost couldn't hold it together in work today but yous have really helped.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow - I'll let you know how it goes x

Hiya

I've had the same - I'm 9 weeks, had brown discharge for a week or so and on Thursday starting spotting pink and cramping - this progressed to a red bleed on the Friday, I called the GP and they referred me for a scan at the EPU which is tomorrow morning. It seems to have eased off and back to light brown since the weekend, but I'm still super worried about what they will see at the scan tomorrow! We had an early scan at 7+6 as hadn't had any symptoms and all looked OK there - but anxious that something has gone wrong since then. Good luck for your scan tomorrow and please let us know how you get on! Xx

mrs87 · 04/02/2020 16:01

P.s the internal scan itself is fine, I was dreading it as find anything like that incredibly uncomfortable/painful but it's not as bad as a smear and as long as you relax it's comfortable - the probe is quite thin Smile

Urkiddingright · 04/02/2020 17:25

I hope it’s good news for you OP. I’ve had a few internal scans and it’s just uncomfortable but definitely not painful. It is literally like a thin dildo with lube Grin, crass I know but it’s true.

It wasn’t good news for me when I had brown spotting but I know it can be for some.

Hello everyone, here with an update :)

I had my appointment this morning and it was a bit of a shock. Turns out I'm only about 4 or 5 weeks! My midwife told me I was 7 week from my last period but clearly this isn't the case. It's such a rollar coaster.

From ClearBlue telling me I was pregnant 2-3 weeks 2 weeks ago (translates on the leaflet as 3-4 weeks) to then getting my first appointment with the midwife last Friday and telling me I was 7, and then the hospital thinking I was at 8 week by the time of my emergency call on Monday.

So I've been pushed back 3 weeks or so! Honestly so shocked.

They couldn't tell much from the scan because I am so early but the could tell me that it's not Ectopic, checked my ovaries, and gave me this TINY little picture of my little belly bean.

They've booked me in for another scan in 2 weeks time for another check. But oh my gosh, only 4-5 weeks? My head is gone haha!

I'm not going to tell you not to worry as I know you will anyway, but I bled for some time. From around week 6 to week 9, some days it was heavier than a period, other days it was just there when I wiped and was more of a pink discharge.

I to got sent to the EPU where they scanned me for three consecutive weeks to make sure it wasn't a threatening miscarriage and to make sure baby was OK. I'm now 13 weeks and I haven't had any bleeding in a month.

Just take somebody with you to your scan off you can and try not to think the worst!

Workplaceworries · 05/02/2020 13:10

Sorry I didn't see your response!
But congratulations. My midwife also dated me further along and I was only 5+4 at my first scan.

Amichelle84 · 05/02/2020 18:31

Congratulation!! So happy everything is ok for you x
