Letter from hospital about urine results

I just had a letter through from the hospital asking me to go in and give another urine sample, after the one I gave at my booking in appointment on Jan 24th. Exact wording:

"You recently had a urine test sent to the laboratory for examination.
The results of your urine test are now back.
This is usually due to contamination and is nothing to worry about; however, a repeat sample will confirm that no further action is required.
Occasionally, antibiotic treatment may be required if an infection is identified"

Obviously I will go and give another sample tomorrow. However, does it sound like there is some text missing from the letter, telling me what they found?? I called the hospital and my midwife but no reply yet.

Both DH and I had STD checks. I certainly haven't been with anyone else, and I'm pretty certain he hasn't...

Trying not to freak out! Has anyone had anything similar happen?

It could be a simple urine infection.

It could be anything. Not sure why STD was the first thing that sprang to mine?

TokyoSushi · 03/02/2020 14:35

It's fine, I wouldn't think STD either...

Sounds to me like a borderline result. It's possible that stuff from one's vagina could get into a urine sample and give a false positive. That's why they want you to do another one to make sure. It is tiresome when you're not trusted to wee into a pot correctly.

Phew. Ok. I guess I just naturally thought of STDs!

I had this in my current pregnant, went back to do another test- all fine and no further issues. The second sample came with quite strict instructions on how to give sample (wash hands fist, wipe yourself, release first bit of wee into toilet, then provide sample etc....). There were no issues with that sample.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 03/02/2020 14:45

Contamination means the sample is contaminated for some reason, lid not put on properly, something else got in there with the urine etc etc.It doesn't mean contaminated by your sample.

I had a couple of times. Once it was nothing once it was a uti. And yes to all the instructions making sure the first bit of wee is let out is very important.

Thanks all.

Thinking back, I probably messed up a bit with the sample when I "gave" it. I stupidly went to the loo right before I left for the hospital. When I got there I could only produce a trickle. After I'd been waiting for about 15 minutes I went back into the loo and was able to produce some more. Maybe this explains it.

It means your sample grew different bacteria some of which could be due to contaminants. If you were not pregnant and had no symptoms, no one bothers but due to pregnancy they repeat. ensure you try to catch a middle of the urine stream for the next test. I'm sure it will come back negative.

If it puts your mind at ease I had this with a blood test. The HIV blood test!! They said it happens quite often with pregnancy testing. Contamination happens and also pregnancy hormones cloud results sometimes. Honestly don't worry about it 💕

Thank you! I feel better about it now.
