Is it possible to avoid ante/post-natal depression in subsequent pregnancies?

I'm 21 weeks pregnant with DC3. DC1 I felt low for a couple weeks, but it passed quickly. DC2 I had full blown ante and post-natal depression which took me a good year to overcome.

Is it likely I will go through it again this time? Or because ive had it before, doesn't mean I'll get it again? I'm so so scared of going back there.

Have you received counseling ?

Hi OP, sorry - no advice, but hopping on as I've had the same question. I had antenatal depression (severe but short-lived) and PND (milder, but still pretty grim) with my daughter, who's now a year old. Starting to contemplate another baby in the next year or two, but I'm terrified of facing it all again.

I had it both times, post birth, and to be honest i am expecting it again but prepared to go back on antidepressants as soon as I see the signs. I think in my case it's a hormonal reaction that triggers it and I dont see how I could avoid it but im ok with that.

I had CBT for 6 months, never went onto medication. Perhaps I need to consider that this time if I see the signs as I don't feel like the counselling made a huge difference. It was more like there was just a chemical imbalance that no amount of talking could change until it eventually improved by itself

I had it after dc1 was really severe lasted nearly 3 years DC 2 I had absolutely nothing apart from the baby blues for a few days pregnant with DC 3 now and it's an occasional worry .I think there can be things that could mabey make it less likely to happen again I had a much better support network with DC 2 and better diet and sleep pattern plus I did think positive alot of the time even though I had to force myself most of the time but I was fine but you can have all that and still get it unfortunately it's sometimes out of our control.
