I have just seen midwife for my 28week appointment she measured me and baby was above 95th centile she didnt say much about this just said we will see were he is plotting in 3 weeks time when I have next appointment but am freaking out does this mean he is going to be massive? Is it possible I have gdb or would this of just shown in my urine sample? I keep having dreams gdb so now am more freaked out, this is my 2nd baby 1st weighed 8lb4oz so a good size but average and he always followed just above the middle line, should they be giving me a scan to check why he so big ? X

Yes. Mine was 10lb2oz. My first two were 8 pounders. It was fine. I did have a section though.
Baby was fine. No issues. Just wait for the next scan. It might just be an inaccurate measurement.

Gestational diabetes wouldn't show on a urine sample. There is a specific test for it. You go in on an empty stomach and they take your blood, then they give you a sugary drink to down and then they take your blood again two hours later.

I would ask your midwife about testing when you next see her to put your mind at rest.

Dinosauraddict · 28/01/2020 01:18

I would recommend having a Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT). I had mine at 28 weeks when baby was also measuring that size. I do have GD. At last growth scan (32 weeks) baby's abdominal circumference is nowliterally off the chart.Sad

Idontkowmyname · 28/01/2020 01:20

I agree with a pp of ensuring you get your glucose tolerance test at 28 weeks. Do you get a dipstick test of your urine at each visit?

Idontkowmyname · 28/01/2020 01:21

Sorry just noticed you are currently 28 weeks speak to your midwife as soon as possible to arrange this.

Pinkywoo · 28/01/2020 01:23

I measured enormous, well above all the lines on the chart from 28 weeks when the midwife first measured my bump. My GTT was fine and DS was 7lb 9, despite being predicted about 9 and a half pounds, apparently I was just full of fluid!

KHall84 · 28/01/2020 07:29

@Idontkowmyname yes they do a dipstick test and was all clear and they also send that away to be tested and they done my bloods do I still need to request a separate test for GD ?

I measured at the 97% percentile at 28 and 33 weeks. I haven’t had the baby yet so can’t tell you the end of the story yet though, sorry!

I had an early GTT because of family history which was fine and there are no plans to retest. The consultant said he was happy because all the measurements are in line and growth has been consistent, not spiked. Apparently the head measurement indicates how big your baby should be so if the tummy is in line with that, everything is ok.

Ask for the test for peace of mind but hopefully it’s just a big, strong baby.

KHall84 · 28/01/2020 08:05

@carbis thank you am having a 4d private scan on Sunday I have just remembered and I know they do all measurements so I will definitely be asking questions about tummy and head etc amd seeing what they currently think he weighs hopefully that will put my mind at rest a bit more x

@KHall84 it's irrelevant if the urine tests are clear, that's one indicator but doesn't diagnose. I have confirmed GD but my urine doesn't show it, you need the actual GTT!

starlightmagic · 28/01/2020 08:40

Me! Now 30 weeks so will be interested to see how she measures at the next appointment

Idontkowmyname · 28/01/2020 08:56

@KHall84 a pp is spot on that the urine test is only an indication and you need the glucose tolerance test to confirm. It’s essentially a blood test before breakfast having not eaten since the previous night(usually able to have a light snack before 10pm) you drink a sugary solution(with a set and known quantity of sugar) and you get either one or two more blood tests to see how your body processes the sugar. Bring a book or something to read as it’s a good couple of hours all up. Pop a banana in your bag to eat as soon as your final blood sample is done as you might feel a little nauseous after not eating and having the sugary drink.
Oh and please don’t panic es even if it is gestational diabetes it can be easily managed. Usually altering diet will be sufficient but medication may be required. You will be supported and guided through the process by health professionals.

Me! 🙋‍♀️ I've pretty consistently measured over 95th centile when my bump has been measured and have have several growth scans. Turns out baby is actually plotting around the 50th centile and I have Polyhydramnios. I'm just coming up to 38 weeks now and am having w3ekpy scans to monitor. Will be induced on Monday if he doesn't make an appearance before then.

doadeer · 28/01/2020 09:31

I measured above 95th every single test. They did three glucose tolerance tests! And negative every time. They said they didn't want me to go over my due date, in the end i had an elective section (different reasons) and baby was 9lbs 3 born at date.

They will likely just keep an eye on you.

And as PP have said the Glucose test is different to urine tests - you fast then have blood taken, drink a sugary drink then have blood again after an hour then after another hour. It's a pretty miserable morning

CloeDee · 28/01/2020 12:06

i am measuring just on the line of the 95th percentile, i was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks i'm now 31, i'm being monitored more often and to be scanned every 2 weeks.

Mol5 · 28/01/2020 12:16

I measured 95th at 28wks, 98th at 30wks and 101st at 32wks.
I was sent for a growth scan at 32wks to check for polyhydraminos (excess fluid).
They recommended a gestational diabetes test which was negative.
There was no excess fluid either but baby was estimated 6.5lb at 34 weeks!
Now i'm 36 weeks and got my next growth check tomorrow..
They said if baby was consistently that large they would consider induction by 40 weeks so as not to let it go overdue. Waiting to see!

elb1504 · 28/01/2020 13:09

At 28 weeks I was measured at 97th percentile, midwife wasn't too bothered and said she'll check at 31 weeks. It even says on the bottom of my chart if over 95th percentile at 1st measuring not to do anything regarding extra referrals until after measuring at 31 weeks.

manicmumdayss · 28/01/2020 14:09

Yes, I did from about 26 weeks, in the end baby was 11.2 lbs. no GTT for me.

Baby was absolutely fine, I did have a section though but it was planned as my bump was measuring 40 weeks at about 32!

I just had to move straight into 3/6 month clothes Grin

manicmumdayss · 28/01/2020 14:11

I meant no GD and I had the GTT Blush

KHall84 · 28/01/2020 19:47

@manicmumdayss thanks 11lbs you are a trooper sm not sure I could manage that I didnt think I looked that big compared to last time but clearly I must be Confused but def starting to struggle today feel like baby has moved lower down but everyone advice has been really helpful x

I'm the same, 28 weeks and off the chart at first bump measurement. Then I had a 4d scan with all the measurements a few days later, and measured 16th centile, same as my 20wk scan. I'd take bump measurements with a pinch of salt

manicmumdayss · 29/01/2020 18:01

@KHall84

I struggled a lot after 32 weeks, but it had its upside baby drank more milk after birth so slept through the night solidly from 12 weeks.

I hope you're OK I know it's tiring x

KHall84 · 02/02/2020 16:57

Hi everyone so just a little update, I had private scan today and baby is measuring on the larger side and it measuring about 3lbs 7oz and am 28+5 weeks pregnant so still a long way to go but they said baby looked very healthy etc which is main thing so am going to see how I progress and see at my next midwife appointment at 31 weeks how I split on the line and ask about the gd tests etc or if they think everything is fine x

auntienameyname · 03/02/2020 11:37

Ive had the same thing, at 27weeks my baby was above 97th centile. Midwife booked me a GTT instantly. Ive got it tomorrow i'll be 28weeks!

My first was 8lb1 and i didnt have any of these issues, but i know my bump is much bigger this time. I dont have any risk factors of GD or family history of it so am thinking its more waters this time? Im having a csection for other reasons this time so know i probably wont get a growth scan! Its weird but i really feel like ive always known this baby will be alot bigger..
