Wondering if anyone who has an underactive thyroid can let me know how this affected their pregnancy? I am thyroxine controlled and take my daily medicines but just wondering if there waa anything different about your pregnancy! :)

Hi, yep - I was on a 100mg dose of thyroxine prior to getting pregnant, that had to be increased to 175mg from the start of my pregnancy. I am currently 30+4 and it hasn't affected my pregnancy in any way so far, other than the increased dose.

@bookworm83 - thanks! ive not had my bloods checked once yet, my 100mg dose has also stayed the same, no one has told me to change it! currently 8+5.

im worried that ive not increased!

you need to have your bloods checked once per trimester and you might need your levels adjusting. Call your GP first thing Monday morning and ask the receptionist if a GP can refer you for a blood test asap, no needfor an appointment if they are happy to do you a form. Once that test is done they may adjust your dose. Mine had to go from 75mg to 100mg.

Nothing to panic about, but do get your level checked asap so it can be adjusted quickly if necessary.

I'm 27 weeks and due another level check next week. Other than checking my levels and adjusting my dose I've not had a problem.

Hi, I'm on pregnancy #3. I was told the first trimester is the most crucial in terms of checking dose - I got told off by the Consultant for this in #2 as no-one had requested bloods for me! I was told after #2 that if I ever became pregnant again I needed to increase my dose by 25mg as soon as I found out. Both pregnancies I've gone from 100-175mg dose increase by the end. I would really advise you get bloods checked ASAP as it's normal for levels to change. I had a blood test in week 8 this time and my levels were very high (despite having increased by 25mg already!). So do please get a blood test!

My dose was 150 and was reduced to 125 during pregnancy as they feared Graves Disease in the baby due to my antibodies. My levels were checked every 3-4 weeks and dose reviewed by my consultant.

That’s bonkers. After 3mc I increased my own dose the minute I found out and then got the GP to refer me to the hospital antenatal endocrinologist.

I now get seen at hospital every four weeks. You really can’t be passive about this.

I'm afraid the main impact for me was excessive weight gain in pregnancy - 28kg for the first (when my thyroidism was undiagnosed, actually I believe the first pregnancy caused the thyroid issue) and 25kg for my second (when I was super vigilant on calorie intake). I did lose the extra weight pretty quickly post birth the second time, longer the first as diagnosis took a while, but it was quite uncomfortable to get so big.

I had my thyroid removed last year and solely take Levothyroxine, I was told to increase it by 25mg as soon as I fell pregnant. I would book in to get your bloods done as baby will start sucking up your thyroxine so you'll need more. I was on 150mg prior to pregnancy, then went to 175mg when I fell pregnant and I'm now on 200mg as I started going underactive. I'm 20 weeks now and had bloods checked twice throughout pregnancy and will get them checked again at 24 weeks Smile

elliemcx · 30/01/2020 18:25

I've been increased as well, and blood tests once every trimester

SpimblesDimbles · 30/01/2020 19:03
