Hi everyone I have my 12 week scan in 2 weeks time and I was just wondering if anyone can tell me how long it normally takes? Its on a day i'm working so it would helpful if I could let my work know how long i'll be away. I'm planning on having the NT test as well.

10 or so minutes but a healthcare assistant will check your urine and bp first. Scans often don’t run to time.

I had the scan and all the tests they offer (including bloods). The scan itself was about 10-15 mins, it was waiting for the scan and the blood test which took the longest. Waited around for about 45 mins.

I was in there for about 30 mins plus bloods beforehand.

The letter for my scan said to allow 2 hours. This was because we saw the midwife first to sign permissions for the NT and do some other bits. Then wait for scan and then see the midwife again to set up other appointments. The long time was because the clinic is notorious for running late and it prevents people complaining too soon because they can say "the letter does say allow 2 hours"

Thanks everyone for your replies, I'll probably say i'll be away 2 hours just in case of any delays.

The scan itself isn't lengthy, but every scan appointment I've had has taken a good 1.5-2 hours overall, what with extra bits and bobs (various combinations of vaccinations/blood tests/urine tests/being weighed etc, and the associated waiting for each step).

You girls are lucky. At my local hospital it says to be prepared for a 4 hour wait( including scan, midwife, bloods, plus I see a consultant), and they are correct.

Dating scan was super quick as the only think they do is measure baby head to bottom and then if you want the NT they measure that.

I was in and out in 30 mins x

Mine took 3 hours end to end because our baby wasn’t lying in the right position and it took two walks to get him to turn so the sonographer could take the nuchal measurement. I’d add an hour onto your time just in case.

Blitzen2 · 24/01/2020 17:44

It’s hard to put a time on it. It all depends on the person scanning, how the baby is behaving and if anything is found that needs to be followed up. I would say an hour incase your not taken on time

Inthesky42 · 24/01/2020 18:24

I was there 2 hours as they sent me for a walk as baby wasn't in the right position to do the measurements!
