Not finding out the gender but the sonographer spotted it easily - does that mean it’s a boy??

Hi everyone, please don’t comment with ‘if you’re not finding out then why are you posting this thread’ 🤣 It’s human nature to be curious, even if we’re planning to keep the gender a surprise!

Basically I went for a 16 week consultant appointment today and the doctor gave me a scan too. The midwife told her not to spend too much time on ‘that area’ as I’m not planning to find out. My husband also wasn’t there as we didn’t realise i’d get a scan today.

I mentioned to be doctor that I was starting to get really tempted to find out, but that my husband still didn’t want to.

Anyway, the doctor did say ‘are you sure you don’t want to know as I can see what it is?’ She said she would need to double check, but was pretty sure she could see.
It was SO hard to refuse, but I said no.

Then after she’d finished scanning she said ‘sorry about that’ and I was like ‘it’s fine, I didn’t even see anything’.

Does this mean it’s a boy? Because I’m guessing it was pretty obvious to the doctor?

Has anyone had a similar experience but it’s been a girl?

I’m so curious and am still undecided as to whether i’ll Give in and find out for sure at my 20 week scan!!

Sort of. With my first pregnancy, I asked the sonographer if she could see what it was....and she said, yes, she’d been able to see. I then asked as I did want to know and she said it was a girl (which she was). So I wouldn’t read too much into it. With DD2 they couldn’t see as she had her legs crossed, so the sonographer probably just meant that the baby was in the right position to be able to see the sex.

Probably cos they know what everything looks like in detail it would be obvious for either sex at the right angle.

On a sonographers screen a boy is a line and two dots and a girl is three lines. There is something to spot for both sexes so I don't think it means it's a boy.

I’m having a boy and the sonographer spotted it within 2 seconds of putting the probe on my tummy!

No. It means it is either, because the person doing the scan knows the difference:

I wouldn't say so especially Ifyou see it every day and know what you're looking for. I'm having a girl and when they showed between her legs it was really obvious she didnt have a penis, it was 3 little lines instead

I had a scan for my twins and straightaway they spotted twin 1 was a girl. I had to go back another day to find out that twin 2 was a boy as position wasn't right.

I tend to agree that its probably more that the sonographer knew what they were looking at, due this being their job!

No, not at all. I was told I was having a girl immediately, it was 99% clear to them and I wanted to know!

ChilliMum · 23/01/2020 15:05

Not at all, when I had dd I wanted to know the sex and we even asked if she was sure as there are only males born in dh family so quite a shock (dd is still the only girl).

The sonographer said absolutely, the way dd was lying she could see perfectly so it most probably means that your baby was just in a good position to see.

Thanks so much everyone 😀

We had a 16 week scan & she knew straight away it was a girl. Similarly at my 20 week, the sonographer scanned over that area & said oh yes, def a girl without hesitation! Then back tracked & said they can never confirm 100% 😂 NHS guidance & all!
