Zika - Cape Verde

Hi,

Zika was very much an issue in my first pregnancy and we were very limited for places to go on our honeymoon...

Now I'm pregnant with #2 and we'd like to go on a holiday before June. Somewhere warm and sunny... We've always wanted to go to Cape Verde and the risk is down a lot compared to two years ago.... has anyone pregnant recently been to Cape Verde? Would you go when pregnant?

I went to Cape Verde and it was ok as long as you stay in the resort. Dubai is a safe option, it's extremely clean there?

Peanutty86 · 20/01/2020 15:09

Were you pregnant? We're literally only worried about Zika.

Dubai is actually our second option but I'm a bit hesitant....

I would say if you’re worried about the Zika risk now then you will struggle to relax when you’re there.

We’ve had a similar dilemma with the Bahamas, although we had booked it before I was pregnant. The FCO says no but CDC and ECDC say yes... it’s so hard to find any certain answer but I think it’s because there are no current outbreaks and it’s very hard to track at lower levels. We live abroad and we have an institute of tropical health I was able to call for more information. I don’t know there is similar in the UK though?

Thanks Betsy, I'm not too worried to be honest, it's my husband.... I've pointed out that on the zika map it's the same colour as France and he wouldn't think twice to go there. Not sure if there's anything like this as I'm not British myself and know that where I come from we to have something like that, so might just phone there.

Last year we were trying to conceive and was so hard to choose an exotic option without risk of zika. And we preferred to choose Greece so we don't get stressed during our holiday and we've done well as by the time of our holiday I was pregnant so we travelled when I was 10 weeks pregnant

We wanted to conceive but my OH had just come back from working in an African country where Zika is known to be.

I didnt want to chance it so we just waited for a while before actively trying. IMO the negatives of zika on a fetus far outweigh anything else.

It sounds like im on the side of your husband here!

I would 100% choose Dubai over Cape Verde. I've been to both (Dubai 3 times), Dubai is very westernised and if you needed any medical treatment (I know it's a very small chance) the healthcare in Dubai will probably be 1000x better than Cape Verde. Granted I went to Cape Verde 6 six years ago so things may have changed now, but it's a very poor country and can't even begin to imagine what the hospitals would be like. Dubai is amazing I absolutely love it, you get totally spoiled and will be in the lap of luxury.

Me and my husband have just got back from our honeymoon in Dubai, we were meant to be going to Thailand but changed last minute due to me being pregnant and Zika virus in Thailand. Although Dubai wasn't our dream location I would say it is a good holiday destination when you are pregnant. The flight isnt too long and there is no risk of zika. We didn't stay in Dubai itself- we stayed an hour away at hilton ras al khalfia which was a lovely resort. Only thing I would say is Dubai is check what temperature it is going to be when you are there, it was 25 when we were there but the temperature does go up drastically over the next few months. Happy holiday planning Smile

We looked at Cape Verde for our babymoon and decided against it due to zika. We’ve opted for Mauritius instead. I understand the difficulty in finding somewhere ‘zika free’ with a luxury feel (we wanted a nice big child free trip whilst we still can) but like others have said, I probably couldn’t relax in Cape Verde xx

Peanutty86 · 21/01/2020 08:40

Thank you all. I think you're right and we'll do Cape Verde another time....

For some reason I'm worried about Dubai with a toddler - probably ridiculous.

Aww @Siobhan1989 we went to Mauritius in our honeymoon when I was pregnant with our first. 😊

I've not got children (currently pregnant with number 1) but from what I've seen each time I've been Dubai is a great place for families with children 👍🏻 Always lots of families with young children there and there are some fab family friendly hotels

Lulubump94 · 21/01/2020 12:23

Where we stayed there were loads of families with young children and babies, all of the staff at our resort seemed to be great with children too, I wouldn't see any problem with taking a toddler there. Enjoy your holiday Smile
