Help! Confusion over sex of baby from scan

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone thought they found out the sex of the baby but it turned out to be wrong? I wanted to keep the sex a surprise but at my 20 week scan I thought I saw 2 round shapes that resembled testicles when the technician zoomed between the legs. I'd be delighted with a boy or a girl but was really hoping I wouldn't find out until the birth and now I'm worried I've accidentally ruined it for myself! I'm also driving myself crazy googling scans to see if I can find one that looks like what I saw but my head is a blur now. Can anyone help? Thanks!

I have 3 boys. I didn't see what you describe with any of them. I always asked at my scans and they were correct. I could see they were boys. Google some baby boy scans to see if you find what you saw.

I am having a boy. The baby was squirming around a lot during the scan and to be honest I saw absolutely nothing - I am only going on what the sonographer told us! I think it's still 50/50 based on what you've described above.

I think it's impossible to say what sex your baby is if you didn't ask the sonographer to confirm what you think you saw.

There are lots of things in there that could look like male parts on a 2D scan. Things like legs in cross section, the cord, feet curled up to be near the body ..... you're not trained enough to decide what they are.

Congratulations on your baby, and try to forget what you think you saw. If the baby is a boy it will be tempting to think you knew it, but in reality there's just a 50% chance .....

I agree with @HappyAsASandboy, you can spend ages looking at other scans to compare but you'll never know unless they confirm it. None of our side on scans showed anything, only when she went underneath and you could see for definite it was a boy! I'm so pleased I found out though, we have a name and I'm more excited for him to arrive Smile xx

At my 20 week scan I also saw what you describe (or similar, can’t remember exactly) and felt very pleased with myself for working it out.

Until the end of the scan when we were told ‘girl’. And yes, I indeed had a girl.

Mine was a very very clear boy at my 20 weeks scan, absolutely no mistaking it lol. Try not to stress about it. I did the same the first time round, was convinced I had seen boy bits but wasn’t entirely sure and spent the rest of the pregnancy wondering. Turned out he was a boy after all but I still don’t really know if I actually saw something or not. Just enjoy it and what will be will be!

I asked at my 20 week scan the sonographer said "see, you can see the testes here", and tbh I had no clue even when I was looking at what she was showing me.

Im 31 weeks now and going off what I was told! I think its no use trying to work out for yourself. If you really want to know you can book for a private scan

Hi,

We were told the wrong sex at an 18 week scan. Went from girl to boy at 20 week scan!

I would just make sure the scanner is as sure as they are able to be, and don't try and guess what you are seeing!

MrsEG · 18/01/2020 09:03

Hi OP, I don’t know whether this helps as I’m no sonographer but I am currently expecting twin boys and was told this week (34 weeks) that the testes will only be descending now and before that are still in their abdomen! So highly unlikely you saw them! We have seen their penises many times (they’re little show offs!!) but these definitely look like little willies and not round balls. So I don't think your surprise has been ruined here :)

Vixx3n · 18/01/2020 11:25

I was convinced at my last growth scan (39 weeks) that I'd seen testicles and was quite annoyed that the sonographer had done a close up of them when I'd informed her we didn't want to know the gender. She then advised us that they were in fact the kidneys and I had a quiet chuckle to myself Grin

Honestly it’s harder than people realise to determine sex from a scan for the non experienced. If they didn’t tell you then you don’t know what it is, you’ve still got a lovely surprise to look forward to :)
