Is it a good idea to use hand held steamer on baby clothes instead of washing them?

No, I would just wash them. I did buy one when we had our son, but it's still in the box somewhere. If clothes have manmade fibres in, I'd be worried about damaging them with that level of heat.

I have a high end handheld steamer. It’s not a substitute for washing clothes unfortunately. It ever so slightly freshens them up, as in the same amount that ironing unwashed clothes would do. It’s not the same as a dry clean.

No issues with it ruining my clothes.
