What is looked for on 1st blood test with midwife?

Hellooo, I’ve got my first booking tomorrow with my midwife and she said she will take bloods.

I’ve been feeling really low on energy and faint, I was wondering if they check for things like anemia in the blood tests? If not what else do they check for?

Basically I’m terrified of needles and I’m hoping they do a check for everything major at once so that it can be over and done with 😂.

Can't remember everything that's checked, but iron is definitely one of them!

Def iron, I got prescribed iron tablets after my first blood test!

They are mostly looking at your blood group & whether you are positive or negative ie. A+ or O- etc!

I just had mine a few weeks ago. They take so many vials of blood lol. The ones I've had back were for haemoglobin and sickle cell anemia, HIV, syphilis and Hepatitis B. Also had my thyroid levels checked as I have hypothyroidism.

You may just find that your blood pressure is really low, your blood volume has increased and progesterone relaxes and dilates your veins etc so can make your blood pressure low. I had lots of dizzy spells and was told was normal.

We check your Hb, your antibodies, and various infectious diseases such as HIV, hep B and syphilis. If your Hb comes back as low then you'll be prescribed iron.
