Following this...... I’m 30 weeks on Friday and for the last three weeks I’ve been getting the most awful cramp in my calf and side of my foot which comes on all of a sudden in the middle of the night. I can’t get out of bed quick enough and end up with sore muscles for days. Hope you get some replies soon Smile

I've had this a few times. I have read that it is good to drink plenty of water at night so you are well hydrated, try and stretch your leg and foot out a bit before you go to sleep and that possibly having more calcium helps - i.e. drink milk (if you do drink it). I have been doing these things and I don't know if it's that or just good luck but I don't seem to get it much. The one time I had it recently I do think I might have been dehydrated. It's awful, about the most painful thing I have ever felt so I will definitely keep trying to do what I can to prevent it! When it happens I find it helps to massage my calf (it's always in my calf) with my hand and to try and move my leg and foot to get the muscle going. Again, I don't know if that actually helps, might just be a distraction from the pain.

Ugh, I got terrible night cramps with both my previous pregnancies. I found that the only thing which prevents them is sleeping with my legs flexed (bent at the knee), I'm pretty careful to position myself thus when settling to sleep and I am pleased to report that I've had no night cramps during my current pregnancy (36 weeks) Smile . The moment I have a nice straight-legged stretch and yawn day or night though, I can feel my calf muscle gearing up to spasm...
Unfortunately I've never found a quick fix for cramps once they're happening, I tend to try and walk around, flex/release the foot and massage the spasming muscle.

Calcium / magnesium

I found a glass of milk before bed helped.
