Induction......more painful?

I was with doc yesterday and he is advising me to be induced at 39 weeks as i have a blood clotting disorder and my bloods are good at the moment so he wants to go while the going is good. I am now 37 + 4 , my second pregnancy. First one was spontaneous labour with no problems (well, bar a tear!!!). Am very nervous of induction as i hear there is higher need for intervention and c section and it can be more prolonged and painful...anyone been induced before??

I was induced with my dd, gel pessaries and waters broken, and I can honestly say there was no problem. However, I would have been very hesitant to have the oxytocin drip, as I had read that is causes fierce contractions, with a higher incidence of intervention required. The pessaries just started off the contractions - very mild backache, until the waters were broken and then it was into strong labour immediately. DD born an hour and half later!

I do remember roaring with laughter when my waters were borken as it felt like such a funny sensation, but perhaps that's just me being odd!

I was induced with dd as my waters had broken but nothing was happening. Gel did nothing and walking around the hos did nothing, eventually I was put on the drip and things started very quickly. An hour later I wanted an epidural as I wasn't allowed move from side to side because dd's heart rate was dropping. The pain wasn't severe just really uncomfortable. Things moved very slow though and I wasn't fully dialated until ten hours afterwards. Had a section in the end because her head was in a funny position. I really didn't find any of it horrific and I never once thought 'never again'. I have friends who started on their own and had worse. Everyone is different but I know that induction can go from not a lot happening to a awful happening iykwim. Hope all goes well for you.

Thanks a million feel more reassured now ...I know eveyone is different and i suppose there are horrer stories for every type of delivery!! Must see him next tues and he will make definate decision then!!!

well thats good to hear Loopy as i was in agony but then again im no good with pain AT ALL! - im a wimp!!

Induction was horrible for me
But giving birth before 40 weeks will be less of a strain on your body as the last weeks of pregnancy are bad for stretch marks/ tiredness/ general body stress - this is why celebs don't usually go to term

TOD - I was induced early with DD, as i had a liver complaint. Personally, I didn't mind it. Nothing happened following 3 pessaries or when the broke my waters (it is a very wierd sensation!!).

But the drip started contractions pretty quickly! The contractions were very strong and close together - I just thought the drip was up too high, but I'm gathering from Mumsnet, that perhaps it is part of inductions!!. Either way my labour was consequently pretty quick and DD was born really easily - no tears or stitches needed.

Coped with the contractions fine with a diamorphine injection quite early on and then gas and air for the remaining 7 hours.

TBH - I'm really worried about a natural labour this time around - quite liked the control of a induction and knowing when I was going to go into labour, but then I'm a bit of a control freak!!

I know what you mean fettle, it will be nice having a date set as the uncertainty can be daunting!!
My husband works away too so it may be easier (from a very practical point of view) to have a date.
Am a nervous wreck since he mentioned it yesterday, I suppose it was the last thing I expected, but I suppose I will go with his expertise and let him make the final decision!!

I was induced with ds1. Had pessaries, waters broken, and drip. It was great. 12 hours after drip ds was born. I didn't have any pain medication, and labor was 6 hours.

It wasn't any more painful than birth of ds2 whose labor was 5 hours. I think I just have fast labors where contractions come on strong and fast.
