First trimester sleep

I’m currently 12 weeks pregnant and have been sleeping like I’ve been drugged for the past 6 weeks!

After some initial insomnia, I am now in bed by 8-9pm every night and sleep straight through 10-11 hours (with one wake up to pee). On days that I’m not in work, I can also have TWO 2 hour naps during the day, which does not stop me sleeping at night. So that’s up to 16 hours of sleep a day!!

Is this normal?! When will I be able to function like a normal human again?? Is there such thing as too much sleep?

It's all normal, your body is adjusting to a new human growing inside you. If you feel the need to sleep and you can do it, then listen to your body and rest.

Is this normal?!

Yes. Imagine a Venn diagram, where one circle is labelled "Normal in Pregnancy" and the other is "Bloody Awful". They almost entirely overlap.

When will I be able to function like a normal human again??

Lots of people report things improving in the second trimester.

Is there such thing as too much sleep?

There could be a reason for your tiredness beyond usual pregnancy tiredness. Anaemia is one. Might be worth discussing with a HCP. Expect them to tilt their head to one side and ask in a loud, clear voice if it's your first baby, and then tell you it's all very normal. It might help to take a sleep diary or something with you to illustrate your point. If it doesn't improve in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks both - getting very familiar with that Venn diagram @tableclothing 🙄

I’m very lucky to be a shift worker with a coincidentally light rota over the past couple of months - I don’t know how women working full time/with other children to look after are managing! Bad rota now for the next month so I’ll have to pull myself together 😬

Yes it's normal and enjoy it while you can, I'm now in my 2nd trimester with a growing bump and sleep isn't coming as easy
