12+5 first scan tomorrow - can they tell gender?

As above, can they actually tell the gender at almost 13 weeks? I'm in the UK, I follow some pregnant ladies on social media (mostly American) and they always seem to find out their babies gender around 12-14 weeks yet us in the UK don't find out until 20 weeks? Surely they could tell around now if they wanted to?

No and they won't, the scan whilst exciting is to check you are both progressing as you should be.

No they can't tell until 16 weeks. I think I'm America they give 3D scans so that's how they can tell a bit earlier.

Some trusts won't tell you the sex at any scan.

Gender scan is 20 weeks nhs
16 weeks if you go private

I had the harmony test at 10 weeks and found out the sex then. At our 12 week scan the sonographer asked if we knew. When we said we knew it was a boy she said she suspected it was from what she could see on the scan. But I don't think she would have said anything even if she had her suspicions at the 12 week scan had we not already known. Plus I think it is relatively easy to tell if it's a boy but very difficult to conclude that it's a girl at that stage.

They saw that mine was a girl at 13+3 weeks. They mostly don't check it at that gestation because they get it wrong too often. In my case they found an anomoly that caused extra significant problems in one sex than the other so I asked for it.

The SEX of the baby is found out early in the US due to routine blood work done early in pregnancy which checks for abnormalities as well as identifying the sex of the baby. Ultrasound can be done from 15-16 weeks privately. Your anomaly scan at 20 weeks may identify the sex but it's not the reason for this scan

No it’s not. The anomaly scan is 20 weeks on the NHS. There’s no such thing as a “gender scan” on the NHS.

People in America probably know the sex of the baby at 12-14 weeks through NIPT testing which is a blood test.

No.

The 13 week scan is a growth scan.
The 20 week is an anomaly.

Some hospitals won't sex your baby at 20 weeks.

Clangus00 · 13/01/2020 09:14

The NHS night not even tell you at the 20 week anomaly scan (note...not gender scan)!
It depends on the hospital policy.
