Some days i'll have loads, especially if my dads here coz he drinks cup after cup, other days like today i havent had any at all.

According to the leaflets the MW gave me, you should be fine.

I only used to drink decaf tea and coffee anyway. But I went off them completely now. They just do not taste nice for me any more.

But if you need the coffee, you drink it responsibly anyway, so I would not think it is a big problem.

I've gone off coffee but I still have a cup of tea a day. IIRC you can have 300mg of caffeine a day

Babycentre.co.uk have provided a caffeine guide:
? 1 mug of instant coffee = 100mg
? 1 cup of instant coffee = 75mg
? 1 cup of brewed coffee = 100mg
? 1 mug of brewed coffee = 150mg
? 1 cup of tea = 50mg
? 1 can of cola = 40mg
? 1 can of "energy" drink = 80mg
? 1 x 50g bar of plain chocolate = up to 50mg
? 1 x 50g bar of milk chocolate = up to 25mg

Hope this helps to put your mind at ease!

oh thanks! my coffee is half caff (claims to be!) so thats 50mg per cup... x3=half daily allowance.

Thankyou

How pregnant are you? I found it really hard to give up coffee at the very beginning and then the morning sickness kicked in and I couldn't face tea or coffee. That sort of kicked my caffeine habit but I still have the occasional cup.

TBH I don't think it's that bad for you, I just haven't really fancied it.

Bmama · 29/08/2007 16:16

I am 35 weeks pregnant and I still have a decaf coffee everyday. I love coffee and found it very difficult to give up, but having 3 mugs of instant coffe per day should be fine. Enjoy

Sarahjct · 29/08/2007 16:19

I've found it quite hard because I'm a tea addict. I know it says 6 cups of tea per day but who drinks cups? I need to know how many mugs/vats of tea I can drink. I've been drinking no more than 3 mugs a day but would love to be able to drink more!

Btw, am I right in thinking that I'll be able to drink even less if I BF?

toadstool · 30/08/2007 11:06

Decaf tea is suiting me fine (Twinings decaf earl grey, slurp), as is decaf coffee; I had a huge capuccino every morning until 7 months - reckon I needed the milk . I quite like substitutes like chicory or drinks like Barley Cup but they're not to everyone's taste...

RGPargy · 30/08/2007 11:08

During the week I'll probably have just one cup of coffee a day which is my morning takeaway coffee at the train station.

At the weekends i'll probably have about 3 or 4 cups of tea a day.

I'm sure you're fine!

aikigypsy · 30/08/2007 11:12

I'm on 3 or 4 cups of tea a day, plus coffee about once a week and so far, so good. I actually found that tea settled my stomach in the first trimester, some of the time.

I am a bit worried about caffeine+BF. I am not sure I'll be able to give up my tea, but it won't be good for the baby's sleep, I'm pretty sure.

Glimmer · 30/08/2007 11:57

I am drinking mostly decaf tea (every day), but also the occasional caf coffee or caf tea. And I eat chocolate...

I have recently heard that the tannic acid in tea can reduce the iron uptake for up to 40% if consumed 1h before a meal and that therefore it is better to drink coffee than tea.
E.g.
www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/nutrition/factsheets/iron.html

Has any of you heard about this?

Naetha · 30/08/2007 14:12

I drink gallons of tea, but I have it very weak, so I'd imagine the amount of caffeine/tannin is minimal

I had a cold last week and as I couldn't take anything other than paracetamol for it, I ended up drinking about 16 cups of tea a day! I'm convinced that enough tea can cure any illness

groovergirl · 31/08/2007 10:06

My first inkling that I was pregnant was when I suddenly could not bear the thought of my one daily cup of coffee. A couple of weeks ago, at 21 weeks pg, I had a cup just to see how baby would react --- and she hated it. She made me so sick. I was nauseous for nearly two days. I won't do that to her again! She seems to not mind tea, tho.
