20W Scan - short bowed femurs

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone had any positive stories to share regarding this matter. Our 20W scan went well until we were told baby's femurs were measuring short (less than 1st centile) and looked bowed. We were referred to FMU who confirmed this.

All other bones, organs, hands, feet, and face look absolutely fine. It is just the femurs we are worried about. We are waiting for the results of a microarray and genetic testing, but they think it could be a form of brittle bones or a skeletal dysplasia called Bilateral PFFD.

I would be grateful if anyone has been through anything similar and might be able to share their stories? I have found some positive feedback for when the bones are just measuring short, but not when they look bowed as well.

Any help would be gratefully received!

Thank you.

Thank you.

I feel that the consultant is not listening to me in terms of my right to choose a termination. If our baby does have a skeletal dysplasia (and there’s no hope it can turn out ok) then I think we want to terminate. The trouble is I’m 24W in 2 weeks and we might not have tests back by then. I have asked if we could have another scan at the beginning of that week, but he’s basically said there’s no point as it won’t have been 3W since the last scan.

They have told me that if it is bilateral PFFD then I would not be able to get a termination after 24W as it’s not a severe enough handicap. But it is a big deal for us to have a child with a lifelong disability. I’ve tried to ring my midwife but she’s away at the moment. 😔

Hi Angie,

Thank you. I’ve been referred to FMU at Liverpool Womens. They’ve done an amnio (Downs, Edwards etc) has come back clear. They’re waiting for the microarray and have Prof Chitty at GOSH looking at the genetic side of things.

I know they are doing everything they can and these things take time. I just would feel much better if I could have another scan before I turn 24W but the consultant thinks there isn’t any point as it won’t have been enough time since my last scan (3rd Jan).
