Hi Ladies,

Just wondering if anyone could make out the gender from the photos of the twelve week scan? I'm sure I can see a little 'thingy' between the legs!

Generally no I don't think you can- it's the 20 weeks scan that they tell you

Beauregard · 28/08/2007 21:35

I was convinced i could see a winkie on dd2's 12 weeks scan.

am pretty sure that genetalia is still developing at this stage - it's determined, but not really distinguished

SlightlyMadShockwave · 28/08/2007 21:35

I don';t think teh sex can be determined from 12wk scan without a very detailed image. Even then you will find that the female appears to have external genitalia.

have a look at this

flowerybeanbag · 28/08/2007 21:36

Ooh, don't know. I had a scan at 16 weeks and definitely saw that DS was a DS then. Not from photos though, only during the scan.

3madboys · 28/08/2007 21:40

i just had a nuchal scan done at 12wks and four days, and the consultant doing it said it was to early to see the sex, and she was very experienced in scnas etc and the nuchal scan is more detailed than a regular dating scan.

apparently by about 16wks you can see the sex

Pixiefish · 28/08/2007 21:42

WOW SMS- that is so intersting

iliketosleep · 28/08/2007 23:15

omg ive just looked at that link and am really disturbed at how the baby is all squashed up in one of the pictures i wanna reach in and pick it up!!! i never thought of the fact that when they are in their they are so squashed!! sorry it has nothing to do with gender of a baby but thought i would mention it

SlightlyMadShockwave · 29/08/2007 09:17

Actually they have to be squashed for there muscles and joints to develop properly - they need something firm to kick and push against.

My DTDs were born at 27wks and apparently lots of premies have problems with muscle development and loose joints cos they are not squashed up any more.

Baffy · 29/08/2007 09:18

Really interesting SMS - never knew that!

Baffy · 29/08/2007 09:19

at my lack of knowledge regarding all things pregnancy related... don't know how I've ended up with ds!

SlightlyMadShockwave · 29/08/2007 09:24

I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for the fact that I had premmies.

JodieG1 · 29/08/2007 09:31

I was told at 11+4 ish with ds1 and 12 weeks with ds2 and he was right both times but this was a private nuchal scan and the professor doing it sexes babies at that stage regularly. Create Health in London is where I had them done.

Sex can be determined at 12 week scan with 70-80% accuracy based on the angle of the genital tubercle. If the angle is 30 degress or less (genital tubercle to angle of spine), probably a girl. If the angle is greater than 30 degrees, a boy.
