Was it planned?

This one made me so angry. Fuck off, how dare you ask me that. Every time someone asked me this I told them it was a private matter between me and DH. Or when I was feeling more assertive I asked them what the added value for them was to know the answer to this question.

I witnessed the same person asking me if it was planned asking another pregnant collegue if it took her a long time to conceive.

Also: how much weight did you gain so far?
How are you going to deliver your baby? (My mum told me to answer that last question by: I don’t know, might try to push it out trough my nosetril).

I am always astounded by the cheekiness of some people who think that pregnancy is an excuse to ask intrusive questions about one’s body/sex life.

I see pregnancy as a very private experience between me and my partner and I didn’t like too personal questions about it. The only thing I ever ask a pregnant lady is how she is doing/ how she feels. If she wants to share any personal info with me, she’ll take the initiative herself.

@Honeybee85 I got "was it an accident?" from an HR Manager no less, who then told me "it's just you don't seem very maternal" and "you'll never get your figure back".

I wanted to nut her.

Vilanelle · 06/01/2020 12:33

Should you be eating that

every. single. day

I had a prawn mayo sandwich and colleague was going on. The shellfish is cooked and the mayo pasteurised!! I swear most people do not research at all. Even brie and camambert is fine if cooked!

Vilanelle · 06/01/2020 12:34

And I am sick of being a performing monkey and showing my bump every bloody day

Honeybee85 · 06/01/2020 12:38

@SnoozyLou

That’s so incredibly rude! And esspecially from someone in that position!
Did you inform anyone in your company about her behavior? She sounds unhinged to react to a pregnancy like that and totally unsuitable for her job!

SnoozyLou · 06/01/2020 12:43

@Honeybee85 God no. They were completely unprofessional from top to bottom. I think being pregnant was a blessing as it made me take a step back and say "Why am I working here again?". When they accidentally forgot they owed me about a grand in holiday pay that was the last straw. And these were Solicitors Hmm

Honeybee85 · 06/01/2020 12:50

@SnoozyLou

No way Shock. They sound like total twats and very stupid on top of that (they’re lucky you didn’t file an official complaint for pregnancy discrimination against that firm after those comments).

Good for you that you don’t work there anymore.
Toxic work environment is the last thing you need during pregnancy. God knows how unbearable they already are when you’re not overly hormonal/ emotional.

'Don't do that/stay where you are - you're pregnant' - I may be but I am still (at this stage anyway) capable of getting out of the chair to get myself a drink.

'How are you? Any health issues?' - none of your business.

'Glad that he got there is in the end' - said about my DH. We may have been trying for 5 years, but I am pretty sure that the IVF doctor helped with that one.

'Was it an accident' - yes I tripped over and accidentally paid the IVF clinic around £7-8k for two rounds of IVF!

'You have definitely gotten bigger over Christmas' - I am growing a human. It is not all mince pies and chocolate (allegedly).

My favourite thing at the moment is that I have always been bigger, so I am finding people that I don't know well looking at my stomach a lot. I am very round, but they are almost eyeing me up trying to decide if I am pregnant or just fat and then not saying something so they don't offend me!

Mintjulia · 06/01/2020 14:23

“Christ, how old are you?”

A slightly cleaner version of my boss’s response when I informed him of pregnancy. Hmm

EarlGreyT · 06/01/2020 15:45

@CornishMaid1
'Glad that he got there is in the end' - said about my DH. We may have been trying for 5 years, but I am pretty sure that the IVF doctor helped with that one.

If you really want to shock the person saying that, you could say in response “my husband didn’t get me pregnant, another man* got me pregnant while my husband watched”

  • this only works if the IVF Dr doing the embryo transfer is male.

Each pregnancy (3) I've been on cyclizine for nausea and vomiting, and each time I've had 'have you tried ginger?'
I've also had 'was it planned?'
'no need for anymore now you've got one of each'
'rest as much as you can' yeah with 2 other kids I'll do that!
And my absolute favourite of all time is when people comment on my size 'you sure it's not twins' 'you must be ready to pop' etc.
Fuck. Off.
Just. Fuck. The. Fuck. Off..... Forever

brightbird · 06/01/2020 18:48

This thread is great! Though to be honest I think I have been pretty lucky with comments. Was expecting to get some irritating ones about cycling while pregnant but so far so good!
There are some things that annoy me but they aren't rude, I just find them inane.
'you're definitely getting bigger '. Yes. That is how it works.
' do you know what you're having? ' um. A baby!? I mean I assume they're human as the sonographers probably would have said otherwise. I get that for a lot of people the gender is really important /exciting but as far as I am concerned it is one of many characteristics they will have.

I did have an encounter in a shop when I asked where the nursing bras were (to have a look at the options) and got quizzed on due date, bra size etc 'oh it's too early yet.' piss off and show me where they are! If I want advice I will ask!

DelurkingAJ · 06/01/2020 19:00

Not one but two (otherwise lovely) gents at work told me ‘you must have timed that very carefully’. First time round I was stunned into silence. Second time round I grinned and said ‘are you really asking about my sex life?’ And watched colleague turn bright red.
