At what stage in your pregnancy did you start buying bits for the baby? I'm 17 weeks and anxious about leaving things to the last minute as will be costly but nervous to start too early.

After the 20 week scan was all ok we got most things in (had been saving) was a good job as DD decided to rock up early!

I shopped around a lot starting from about 12 weeks (baby wardrobe and changing table for a bargain on FB marketplace). I didnt start buying more and pieces until i was past 20 weeks. I have found it useful to spread out the buying. Start by making a list and then my advice is shop around.. esp because the sales are cheaper for buying baby stuff.

We’re getting the big ticket items now (10 weeks) because of the January sales + Mothercare closing down sales!

As soon as had 12 week scan. By 20 weeks had everything. ( with dd)
Kept. Most of it. And lots was neutral.. This time round only had to get a few bits.. Prep Filter.. New changing bag.. And random Bits. Got all by 15 weeks.

I didn't really start till after 20 weeks. I'm 31 weeks now and have got all the big things, but some little bits to get. Shop around, see what's available 2nd hand. You don't need vast amounts for when the baby is born initially and as long as you have pram/car seat/cot you can get pretty much anything else at a big 24 supermarket or delivered next day on amazon.

My DH was desperate to start buying things as soon as we found out but I wanted to hold off. I'm 16+3 now and bought a little outfit in the Next sale a couple of days ago but that's all we have so far. Will probably start buying things at the end of this month after the 20 weeks scan x

I didn’t start until late - about 32 weeks and only because I had Braxton Hicks in the middle of the night and that made me realise if the baby came they would have no stuff. But the truth is you don’t need an awful lot of stuff and we got given lots, pretty late on from friends, so I was glad I hadn’t already bought those things. I don’t think there is any right or wrong answer but if you leave it late I don’t think that will be a problem. One thing I wish I had done sooner was a bit more reading on the day to day practicalities of looking after a baby. I had read books about parenting styles but I hadn’t read up on feeding and changing nappies etc.

Buy when you're comfortable or you see things you like and need or is on sale!

I'm 14 weeks and we've only bought a couple of clothes items (I couldn't wait and bought them after our 12 week scan) and got some free new bottles from facebay

We will probably wait until our 20 week scan to buy all the big bits like the pram and nursery set but will probably paint etc before then.

It's exciting and hard not to buy stuff so definitely don't feel bad if you do! Enjoy it!
I think I want everything sorted before I get too big to want to shop and do stuff.

Good luck!

I started before I was even 12 weeks only like one or two baby grows ( I was a tad eager even though people say you shouldn't ) but I think it's completely up to you! Past 20 weeks I'd say it's absolutely fine to start buying things I'm now 30 weeks and I have pretty much everything I need I'm glad I spread the cost out throughout my pregnancy!

JingleBelle27 · 02/01/2020 18:08

After the 12 week scan we started buying bedroom furniture and ordered a pram (as a lot of big brand prams have waiting lists! Which I didn’t realise. Ours arrived when I was 37 weeks, DS was born at 36 weeks but we were still in hospital).

If we had another I’d probably buy everything as soon as I was 12 weeks.
