Hi All, I'm new here and I'm a first time mum. I need advice please. I'm currently 9w4d and ever since we've found out I've been regularly testing mainly because it literally melts my heart to see a positive test and I'm so excited!.. I went to the drs and had bloods done at 4 weeks which confirmed but that didn't stop me. I done a test today for the first time in a few days and it's now negative.. does this mean I've lost our baby? We don't have our 12 weeks scan until jan 20th but I'm scared now.. has anyone else had this?.. happy new year to you x

They call it the hook effect when your hcg levels get to a certain point it can cause false negative tests.
Id stop testing if I was you your going to drive yourself nuts. If you can why not got for a Private scan before your dating scan if that would put your mind at ease

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 01/01/2020 19:34

I thought the hook effect thing was an urban myth?

Snailandthewhale · 01/01/2020 19:50

What sort of test did you take?

The hook effect happened with me using a FRER, I was beside myself too. But I rested later on the same night (after lots of fluids) and both lines showed up as normal. I did this around 10 weeks.

I'm not sure if the hook effect is the same on a clear blue digi?

RhymingRabbit3 · 01/01/2020 19:55

Did you just take one test? It is possible to get a false negative so might be worth another one to check?

After that I think you need to stop taking pregnancy tests, it's not great when it makes you worry like this and is probably costing a fortune

Aimee91 · 01/01/2020 20:57

Hi, I took the clear blue foldable test and yes it was just 1. I'm going to go to the doctors tomorrow and ask for more bloods because I don't want the added stress tbh. I've spent well over £100 it was well worth every penny but this last one wasn't for obvious reasons! Thank you all for your responses means a lot x

If you're spending this spot of money, why not just go book a private scan? I did at 8 weeks and it was the best thing ever seeing my little bean :) good luck OP Flowers stop pissing on hundreds of pounds Grin

RhymingRabbit3 · 02/01/2020 06:55

I agree with @Igotthem , a private scan is about £70 here - much cheaper and more worthwhile than loads of pee sticks

FenellaMaxwell · 02/01/2020 06:59

I’m going to be completely honest with you - what you are doing is a total waste of money. If something were to go wrong and you were to lose the baby then you would likely still have a positive pregnancy test in the aftermath in any case so if you want reassurance you should book a private scan because a pregnancy test can’t give you that.

IvinghoeBeacon · 02/01/2020 07:01

It’s easy for me to say, but I think you are going to need to find a way to manage the worry that comes with being pregnant and being a parent. You will drive yourself mad testing so much and asking for blood tests. By all means book a reassurance scan given that you are spending so much money anyway. however you will need to find a way to manage the anxiety as the pregnancy progresses

Freshnewus · 02/01/2020 07:10

Book in for a private Ultrasound to reassure you. You can probably get one done today.
Just an example but window to the womb is a national chain with clinics everywhere.

RMF91 · 12/01/2021 16:06

Hi Aimee , just wondering how your pregnancy went ? I am in the exact same position as you was! I have a scan this week but I’m so scared to go in case there is nothing but emptiness there x

Queenbee95 · 12/01/2021 18:37

@RMF91 This happened to me. Positive tests at 4 and 5 weeks. Took a test “for fun” at 8 weeks and there was the faintest of lines. Another test the next morning was completely negative.
I’m now almost 25 weeks. The Hook Effect is definitely not an “urban myth”

RMF91 · 12/01/2021 19:10

Thank you so much for your reply Iv been going completely crazy I haven’t dared to retest because I can’t bare to see the negative lines :( but I have my scan this week I should be around 12 weeks this week and I haven’t bled in between so I was so confused 🤷🏼‍♀️ Iv read about the hook effect but Iv been thinking the worse as people have been telling me no about hook effect xx

Gemmaemilyx · 12/01/2021 20:10

Try and dilute your wee with half water. At 8 weeks my test was very faint compared to others. I diluted the same pee sample and it came back a lot darker. Xx

RMF91 · 12/01/2021 21:46

I will try that tomorrow as I don’t want to turn up to scan and see nothing it would devastate me 🤦🏼‍♀️ I had a chemical pregnancy in august and that hurt me enough. X

Nelly2219 · 12/03/2021 09:18

Any update @RMF91??

RMF91 · 12/03/2021 11:22

@Nelly2219 unfortunately hun I had a loss again xx

Nelly2219 · 12/03/2021 12:53

@RMF91 i am sooo sorry! But did the test came positive and you had a miscarriage?

RMF91 · 12/03/2021 14:31

@Nelly2219 yes I had a lot of positives could never get positive on internet cheapies though. I had positive by doctors also my scan showed miscarriage and I began to bleed 2days after scan x

Nelly2219 · 12/03/2021 14:39

@RMF91that must be so painful! Sorry for that honestly. Hopefully you will have your little one one day ❤️

In my case, I tested negative at 10 weeks this morning. Lucky I found this chat and decided to dilute my urine and one came back positive. Nonetheless, I booked a private scan. Just to calm myself.

RMF91 · 19/03/2021 11:42

Hi @Nelly2219 I have tested today after have a feeling I may be pregnant and I got a faint positive so I’m hoping this one sticks fingers crossed 🤞🏼 I’ll attach a photo :) see what you think? How did your scan go? X @

9 weeks with negative test
Nelly2219 · 19/03/2021 11:57

Congratulations!!

I also hope that it’s your turn this time! ❤️

Believing or not I had false positives in numerous pregnancy tests. I when for my first scan and been told that the sac isn’t there. Me thinking a was 10 weeks pregnant coz of the positive sticks but turns out to be false. Blood test false as well. The pain is immense but we move on and wait for period.

I honestly wish you the best as you will get your little one soon!

I definitely see a positive pregnancy test there!

🤗🤗

RMF91 · 19/03/2021 12:51

I’m a sorry to hear that hun it’s horrible isn’t it when I had my scan and they told me no heart beat I was devastated thought something was wrong with me 😔 hopefully next time is your time too ❤️❤️
Iv never been able to get a positive with these cheapies before but I feel so anxious this time as it will be the 4th time in 11months 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m just hoping it sticks this time round xx

RMF91 · 19/03/2021 12:51
