20 week scan Anomaly

Went for my 20 week scan last week all was looking good apart from couldn’t see the heart properly as baby was in a awkward position. Went back today to hopefully get a better view and I’ve been told ‘4 chamber view abnormal and vessels abnormal’ has this happened to anyone else?
Been referred to Fetal Medicine Unit on Thursday for another scan. I’m besides myself with worry and it’s going to be a long 48hr wait.

No experience but just wanted to give a virtual hug. Hope things are all ok

I have had issues identified at the 20 week scan (not heart). All I will say is that the wait for fetal medicine was the worst time ever but the staff at fetal medicine were incredible and I left feeling far better than I had after the 20 week scan.

Waiting will be so hard, but until you have had a specialist scan it is impossible to say what the outcome might be. There are “abnormalities” which are inconsequential variants of normal, right through to very serious issues, some of which can be operated on successfully. Sadly some things cannot be fixed.
Which unit are you going to? They will do a very, very detailed assessment and then explain to you exactly what they have seen and what it means for your baby. You will then talk through what happens next.
Have you got a contact at your own hospital to talk with after the specialist review?
Hope you have been told about antenatal results and choices website/charity
Happy to answer questions by PM if you wish and will help in any way I can
Sending love x

Thanks for replying. I'm being seen at QMC hospital for the Fetal Medicine appointment tomorrow which is my local hospital. They did say I could possibly be referred to the Fetal cardio unit at Leicester hospital if tomorrow's scan requires it. I just don't really know much just what's wrote on the report. Says "the right atrium appears enlarged on the 4 chamber view and the pulmonary and aorta appear enlarged. I've tried googling but nothing has come up to help.

I had the exact same thing, and oddly enough also at QMC. Everything was absolutely fine when I went to the FMU and saw a wonderful doctor who was actually there when I was in labour coincidentally. They were so thorough, I was wonderfully reassured. I remember leaving the hospital after the 20 week scan and googling it as well and worrying so much but everything was fine and it was just baby in awkward position. Try not to worry too much, they are amazing at QMC so they will look after you well I'm sure Smile

That's great to hear, I really hope that's the same with me.
I know baby was in a awkward position all curled up and has been at every scan so far so fingers crossed for tomorrow. Just 12 more hrs to wait

Good luck for tomorrow @Becks3369 xx

Baggins83 · 02/01/2020 19:38

How did you get on today?

Cheesetrapped · 02/01/2020 20:28

My baby had open heart surgery at Leicester. They have paediatric ECMO, and I do not think you could find better care anywhere.

I hope that your appointment went well. They can do amazing things to fix tiny hearts.

Becks3369 · 02/01/2020 21:42

@Baggins83

My Scan went really well. The dr couldn’t see any issues and spent nearly a hour observing the heart and other places. He even got another Dr to come and have a look and she confirmed that everything looked great. They looked at the sonographers pictures from Tuesday and also couldn’t see any issues other than bad views and baby in a poor position. Got to go back in 2 weeks just to double check but all seems ok.

Thanks all for your support it really did help xx

That is brilliant news. You must be so relieved. Well done minibecks for co operating enough to show a good view. I wish you lots of luck with the rest of your pregnancy and beyond.

Baggins83 · 03/01/2020 14:05

Oh good I am so pleased. They are so thorough we are very lucky to have such a good NHS. They kept an eye on me throughout the pregnancy even though there was nothing actually ever wrong! Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well, enjoy it!
