So I am 4 months pregnant and me and my boyfriend have started to look at serious choices for baby names, he has fell in love with the name Sullivan-Rae (nn sully) and I like it but not sure if I’m in love, any opinions ?

Forgot to add that we’re expecting a little boy x

Yes I like that but I thought that spelling of ray/ Rae was for a girl ?

Crazypanda85 · 30/12/2019 21:55

I love the name Sullivan! Husband doesn't unfortunately so it's off our list but I think it's beautiful.

regularbutpanickingabit · 30/12/2019 21:55

Sully/Sullivan is pretty cool. Not a big fan of double-barrelled names and hardly ever hear them for boys. Only Rae I know is very definitely female so it would sound odd to me. I would use Ray/Rae as a middle name if you really love it, not as a double first name.

Kaykaialf4 · 30/12/2019 21:55

That’s what I was thinking, I don’t really like the look of Ray with the name but it’s the only one that goes🙄 thank you for replying x

It’s so hard to decide and yeah now you have all said about the spelling of Rae I think so too, any suggestions of another name that will go with ? X

Why not just Sullivan? Does it have to be hyphenated?

DramaAlpaca · 30/12/2019 22:02

Sullivan is a very common Irish surname & I'm struggling to see it as a first name. Actually, I really don't like it. Sorry.

Ray, that spelling, is good. Cool name.

KayAR · 30/12/2019 22:06

I suppose I just really like the look of a hyphenated name with it, we looked at alternate spellings because I love the unusual/unique names and he came up with Sullivyn. But it just doesn't look right to me I'm so torn ! Thank you all for your reply's

Bol87 · 30/12/2019 22:18

I like Sullivan. I find Rae quite feminine. I’m using Rae for my little girl as a middle name. The male spelling is traditionally Ray.

I’d def go with Sullivan over Sullivyn, it looks strange.. plus you’ll constantly have to spell his name out! My daughter has a relatively common name (top50) but it has a German & French spelling. We opted for the less popular German spelling & no-one bar family get it right 🙈 People realise it’s spelt differently but can’t remember how so get it wrong anyway!

KayAR · 30/12/2019 22:32

Thank you for your reply, I have a unusually spelt name so I understand that completely it's a nightmare having to spell my name out to literally everyone ! I think I'm starting to love Sullivan now I've gotten used to it he was having none of my suggestions for names as they were 'too weird and sound daft' haha so I think Sullivan it is ! As for the middle name we will have to have a good think x

PrincessHoneysuckle · 30/12/2019 22:40

What about Rai as a spelling?

KayAR · 30/12/2019 22:48

I've never thought of the spelling Rai, I like that !

Bezalelle · 30/12/2019 22:53

I'd pronounce Rai as Rye not Rae.

Sharonthetotallyinsane · 31/12/2019 05:54

Solomon?

Bibby26 · 31/12/2019 11:10

Oh OP I love it!! I know what you mean though it’s so hard agreeing! Me and DH had agreed boys name so easily then we found out we were having a girl and it was a nightmare to choose. We settled on one but I felt the same as you, didn’t “love” it so kept brainstorming and now we have one we both love!

KayAR · 31/12/2019 11:45

Thank you I think I do love it the more we've kind of talked about it ! I think it was more the spelling and It's not what I would have chosen but I can't seem to get it out of my head now , thank you all now it's just a middle name he might let me have this one 😂 x

Iliada · 31/12/2019 12:41

What about Rey - which means King in Spanish?

Darkstar4855 · 31/12/2019 12:47

Sullivan is nice on its own. Don’t bother with the hyphenated bit, you’re just going to spend the whole time spelling it out to people and having to squeeze it in on forms. Why not just have Ray as a middle name.

KayAR · 31/12/2019 13:14

The baby's last name doesn't sound right with Just Sullivan and then my last name if you get me 😂 so Rae kind of split it up and made it roll nicer off the tongue, I like the spelling of Rey I think ! Xx

iforgotthatyouexisted · 31/12/2019 17:24

I know quite a few children with hyphenated names. I very rarely hear anyone use the full name including the children themselves so if Sullivan doesn't go with your surname, best to pick another one surely.

Engard · 31/12/2019 18:11

Love Sully but don't like hyphenated names. Sorry!

BowiesJumper · 31/12/2019 18:45

The hyphen is awful, but Sullivan Ray (ray as a middle name) is nice.

KayAR · 01/01/2020 01:22

We've decided on sulivan-ray thank you everyone ! Xx
