So just for abit of fun, what are you best excuses for why you’re not drinking in early pregnancy. I really don’t want to tell anyone yet Xmas has been a nightmare but actually quite fun to have a little secret and make my oh down the champers when no one was looking - I managed to get away with it (I think) with NYE coming up id love to hear some ways of not raising eyebrows 🤣

Hungover for New Year (especially if you’re in the middle of morning sickness)

Then dry January

cloclo92 · 30/12/2019 09:18

I just drove everywhere to see family so that was my excuse :)

Drink tonic/sparkling water and pretend it's a G&T.

Tonz · 30/12/2019 09:23

I pretended to be on antibiotics with one of mine

Making sure either me or DH order a lemonade disguised as a gin or if at someone else's house filling a wine bottle with the non-alcoholic stuff and drinking from that

Amichelle84 · 30/12/2019 13:43

I pretended it was vodka and lemonade, my friends sussed me straight away and stole it off me and tasted it!

That's basically announcing you are pregnant these days isn't it?

Just don't make any excuses or a big deal of it. People are pretty self absorbed so unless you wave the 'I'm not drinking flag' under their nose they won't notice what you are drinking.

If you are offered wine on the table take it but don't drink it. Get your own drinks and just get a soft drink. If anyone offers to get you a drink pretend to think about it and then go nah, I'm fine for the moment etc.

So far I have got away with driving for most of Christmas.
I've also used "I had a few drinks last night so feel too hungover to have another drink"
Or if at a bar, get the bar maid on side and make sure your drinks look alcoholic (when the pitcher of cocktail came out I quickly got the bar staff to make me one that looked the same and pretended I had poured it from the jug)

When I was about 7 weeks pregnant, I went to a wedding and wasn't ready to tell anyone. Luckily, I don't drink so thought I was all good. One of my friends was 11 weeks pregnant and had told us 2 days before the wedding as she would normally be drinking - she wanted us to help cover it up so she just ordered elderflower tonics and asked them to put it in a gin balloon and noone would have known it wasn't alcohol!

My very drunk friend did guess that I was pregnant though because of my fake shoulder injury that was stopping me going to our usual kickboxing lessons Grin

Thistle23 · 30/12/2019 20:32

say you over indulged over Xmas and can't even look at alcohol ?

Jane1978xx · 30/12/2019 20:34

Antibiotics is always a good one

ElphiasDoge · 30/12/2019 20:34

Holding drinks and not drinking them significantly more effective than excuses for not drinking. Women over 30 not drinking definitely raises eyebrows around here.

I also wore a dressing on my upper thigh which I had marked to look like blood and ooze as an excuse for not going all the way into the hot tub. And surprisingly it worked!

gh621 · 30/12/2019 20:38

A friend of mine got married whilst early on in her pregnancy. They didn’t want to tell anyone (previous miscarriages) so they only told the venue staff and they kept her topped up with appletiser to look like champagne

randomsabreuse · 30/12/2019 20:40

Driving, health kick (have you seen how many calories are in ...) dry January...

Holmes1990 · 30/12/2019 20:45

Yes I think 'I'm on antibiotics' screams pregnancy 😂.

I'm spending NYE with my best friend (who I have told already) so no need to pretend or make excuses and can enjoy my bottle of Nosecco 🤪.

rosie561 · 30/12/2019 20:51

I spent my friends hen do walking around holding a glass of prosecco but never drinking it. I did have a different friend who was in on it though and kept swapping my glass for her half drunk one. It was pretty successful!

mintoreo · 30/12/2019 20:52

I used to fill a wine bottle with a non- alcoholic wine and drink from that whenever possible i.e when people came round / if I went to someones house. Also used to just order a non alcoholic beer if out or a lemonade. Most people wont question you about what you're drinking. I think the more excuses you make the more likely people are to guess.

Yerroblemom1923 · 30/12/2019 21:00

Don't go down the antibiotics route.... Nobody believes it anymore, just screams pregnancy! Now we're all older, in our 40s, my friends and I joke about this when we genuinely ARE having to take antibiotics! Lol

MindyStClaire · 30/12/2019 22:38

Pretty niche, but I'm asthmatic and have had a bad run of colds, needed time off cos of my asthma etc. So I've said that wine makes it worse. Which is true, but if i wasn't pregnant I'd probably still have one in truth.
