Colds coughs sneezing and pregnancy

Hi
My fiancee is coming up to her 13th week of pregnancy. Sadly over Christmas we both caught the cold and cough. Before this happened she had sharp shooting pains and through scans this showed no signs of problems.

However since having the cold cough and sneezing these sharp shooting pains have stopped and when she sneezes it puts a strain around her stomach.

Is there any cause for concern? We are due to have our 1st dating scan on the 31st as well.

Thanks

Tim

Further to the above my fiancee has said that her stomach/abdomen feels cold to touch I have read online that this can be normal but we are concerned if this "cold" has harmed the baby

Thanks

Tim

I’ve had two colds during this pregnancy. Coughing and sneezing can cause round ligament pains, shooting pains and at one point I felt like my ribs were broken every time I coughed.

Make her plenty of honey and lemon and try not to worry, it’s hurting her much more than it could hurt the baby!

Sharp shooting pains sounds like round ligament pain. Not sure about the cold stomach.

Hi all thanks for your replies i probably was not clear in my initial post. The sharp shooting pains stopped when she started with the cold etc, would this be normal/ok

I'm thinking of getting a thermometer to read her temperature just in case it's very high would you think this is a good idea?

Thanks

Tim

Sorry for the double post I don't seem to have an edit option on my last reply. My fiancee has just informed me that while sitting in the front room she is sweating a lot and has been sweating in bed around her legs and under her knees

Thanks

Tim

Probably best off ringing the pregnancy assessment unit for advice over the phone.

commoncoot · 28/12/2019 13:09

Lots of rest and try warm orphanage squash with some honey and lemon on it to help sooth the cough / cold.

The cold itself won't harm baby. Annoyingly there is nothing you can really do for a cold in pregnancy apart from rest and fluids and some paracetamol.

If she's worried about any other day morons she should call the EPU or see the GP

Hi Tim, please ring maternity assessment for advice. I am currently in hospital. Been very ill with flu and apparently could have died it wa that serious. My OH has been ill too but his seems like a cough/cold. Because I’m PG I am much worse. If she has a temp this could be dangerous for her. I don’t want to scare you but if it is flu you wife may need all the round the clock treatment I have had. Is she keeping fluids down? Is she hot? Does she have muscle ache. Fingers crossed it is just a cold though worth checking.
I too have had pains all down my legs.

I had a horrific cold last week which I'm just getting over and had exactly the same as her by the sounds of it! Cold tummy and mega sweats at night, had to change my top in the middle of the night! Out the other side now and fingers crossed all is ok, paracetamol for my throat and soothers for when I was out helped, bar that just loads of Manuka honey and lemon!

timcs · 28/12/2019 18:33

Hi all I bought a digital thermometer now that reads from the ear I've taken two readings from my fiancee and they both come out at around 36c which is not a dangerous temperature. However I am taking on board what you have all said and might still call for advice. She has been drinking lots of hot water as she finds drinking cold water a chore.

@timcs I just wanted to say that you sound lovely and so caring of your fiancé. She’s very lucky.

Me and my husband both have colds right now and I’m 12 weeks pregnant, so far it’s seems like a standard cold and I don’t have any concerns regarding the baby.

I definitely think if you have a number to call for the hospital maternity unit it won’t hurt to be reassured xx

Legomanships · 28/12/2019 22:42

First time pregnant person here...the whole thing is very confusing! I had pains and was worried and then I had no pains and was worried and then I had different pains and was worried. I was told if the pain isn’t persistent and very sore and if my temp is normal and no bleeding it is probably routine pregnancy stuff. Cal if you can just for some reassurance though. Good luck!!!

@Itsnoteasyfeelingqueasy

Thank you for your kind words, with all of the "other" complications my fiancee has and now a cold I sometimes feel the NHS are just not trained for someone having all of these complications. I did call the maternity assessment unit and to be honest they were not much help plus as she is only 13 weeks in they don't deal with anyone below 20 weeks.

However again thank you for your kind words we will just have to wait until the 31st which is when our 1st dating scan is.

@Legomanships

I see that you have had various different "symptoms" too you all have been wonderful here thank you for all of this. Due to recent visits to the hospital my fiancee is put off by going back there as she is struggling from the start to move around a lot. So when we have had to go I have always taken her in a wheel chair as walking is hard on her and also sitting too long is affecting her too.

Hi all we had our first dating scan on the 31st and yes it was at a NHS hospital and this ward was brilliant! I feel now after this experience the staff are understaffed at the other sections of this hospital so I apologise for my previous comments made about the NHS.

The baby was fine and we were 14 weeks plus 2 days in which makes us 15 weeks in today! I have another question to ask which I will create a new thread here for. Again I cannot thank you all enough

Thanks

Tim
