Early scan today - baby measuring smaller than expected

So I went for a private early scan today and we got to see our little bean and hear the heartbeat for the first time. The Doctor seemed very positive about it all and said the heartbeat was very strong for the age/size of the feotus.

My concern is that my LMP was 2nd Nov and I'm pretty regular normally with a 32-33 day cycle. I don't know when I ovulated as i wasn't tracking it but OH and I are in an LDR and were only together from 16th-23rd November. I had my first BFP on 4th December.

I don't know how to work it out from ovulation anyway but going from LMP, I should be 7+5 today however baby only measured 6+1 on the scan (internal).

Does anyone who knows how the dates work have any advice for me? Should I be worried? It's quite a big difference.

I wasn't worried at the time but now I'm overthinking and scaring myself with Google and I'm convinced I'm going to miscarry. Going back for a follow up scan in 2 weeks.

You could easily have ovulated later than expected, especially as you wasn't tracking I really wouldn't be fretting. Sperm can also live up to a week so you may have DTD one day but conceived later another day iykwim.

Also baby's can measure small this early on as scans are harder to measure the earlier you go and you will get a batter idea and your NHS dating scan. We had a few scans before our dating scan (due to previous losses) and every time I went in they measured something different, the nurse told me its normal when I asked why there was always a few days different between scans. Now I'm 16 weeks every scan is spot on.

Also your cycle is slightly longer which is normal for you, so you probably ovulate about 14 days before your period (so for you could easily be CD18ish) by going on LMP it normally goes on a typical 28 days cycle.

Really, really don't sweat the small stuff you heard a good heartbeat and that's all that matters Wink

Hi, I had a scan at 7 weeks (in my calculations) I measured at 6 weeks. By my ten week scan, I measured a bit more than 10, and by my 12 week scan I was back to the original calculations. At the early scan they did say due to it being so early it can change etc xx

You could possibly have conceived around the 26th Nov with sperm from 23rd, meaning at 8dpo you got a BFP which is very possible. That makes you 6+2 today. So it’s possible it’s all correct.

I’ve been told I was measuring smaller than expected twice and both times the outcome was bad, so it is a possibility I’m afraid. I don’t say this because it is what will happen to you but I do feel it’s worth saying, because with me everyone said “don’t worry, it’s fine!” and then it wasn’t fine and I wish I hadn’t been given reassurance when what I wanted was honesty.

That said, you don’t know when you ovulated and you have long cycles, so it’s very possible you just aren’t as far along as you thought. You could potentially get a positive result at 8/9 days after ovulation, which would put you at under 7 weeks now. Early scan dates can be +/- 5 days easily as well. And seeing a heartbeat is a good sign (doesn’t always mean all is well sadly but increases the odds of that quite a bit).

Sorry you’re in limbo, it’s horrible. Hope all is well and best wishes for you either way Flowers

Thanks for the responses ladies. Looking at the signs of ovulation (which I didn't really know before), I think I probably ovulated on the 23rd or 24th November which would make the scan only a few days out. I've read that +/- 5 days is no big deal at this stage. I'm going to try not to worry and just wait till the follow up in a couple of weeks. Thanks to all that responded.

@53rdWay I'm so sorry for your losses and appreciate you being straight with me. I'd rather people answered honestly if they've had experience with this so thank you for that. Obviously I remain hopeful that I won't have the same outcome but forewarned is forearmed xx

I went for a scan when I thought I was 7+0 and I was only 6+1. I knew the exact day of conception etc but it didn’t add up. I assumed I ovulated late or it implanted late. Throughout my pregnancy it’s stuck to these same dates and I’m now 25+4 xx

@kkgg10 thank you, that's reassuring. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy x
