Heartburn 😣

nikdan123 · 22/12/2019 20:57

Hi, just wondered if anyone knew what is best for heartburn. I'm 25 weeks pregnant and heartburn has cranked up a notch today its unbearable 😣 cant cope with this for another 15 weeks.
I have been taking ranitidine but that has been recalled.

I took Gaviscon and it helped a bit. I got through loads when I was pregnant (never had heartburn before or since).

nikdan123 · 22/12/2019 21:18

I did suffer with it before but not this bad it was definitely manageable. Gaviscon was working but it's not touching it now. Think I'll have to go to doctors tomorrow see if they can give me anything

I have a hiatus hernia and normally take lansoprazole but my GP took me off it as soon as I fell pregnant. As a result I've been really struggling with heartburn too - I'm 19 weeks now. My GP said he can't give me anything else as can't guarantee it's 100% safe, and can only recommend Gaviscon Sad I've been getting through loads of it and have also bought some Asda own fruit flavoured rennie-type pastilles which are OK. I think I'm going to have to re-think the way I eat as I start getting bigger (i.e. little and often instead of 3 meals)

buddhababy2019 · 22/12/2019 21:31

Doctor replaces my ranitidine with cimetidine - I'm taking it with gaviscon double action tablets and it's keeping things bearable

BFPhopeful2019 · 22/12/2019 21:41

I’ve been prescribed omeprazole; absolute life saver. I just called the doctor and they prescribed it over the phone. My midwife hit the nail on the head; why keep suffering and taking something that isn’t working (such as gaviscon). I can now sleep, eat and generally just be.

PixieDustt · 22/12/2019 21:55

I had this right up until I gave birth.
I stupidly didn't take anything for it.
I used to get heartburn before being pregnant but not had it at all since having DS.
I feel for you though. It's bloody horrible!

MrsMck18 · 22/12/2019 21:56

I have been taking the Rennie dissolvable tablets and they really help me!

CoffeeAndCarbs · 22/12/2019 22:06

I suffered with acid reflux before falling pregnant and took omeprazole. It was the only thing that worked, nothing else touched the sides.

When I fell pregnant my midwife advised me to stop taking it but did say that I could start using it again in the later stages of pregnancy?! I am 15 weeks now and since the nausea started subsiding, the heartburn has started to kick in more. I'm going to ask my midwife at my next appointment about going back on omeprazole. It really is a wonder drug!

buddhababy2019 · 22/12/2019 23:17

Please be careful with omeprazole - it may work wonderfully for the acid but the long term problems it can cause are far worse! I was on it for 2 years for a hiatal hernia and ended up with all manner of long term stomach problems as a result.

nikdan123 · 23/12/2019 05:35

I went to the shop last night and bought some nexium which contains that omeprazole. I was desperate so had to try it. Woke up this morning absolutely fine touch wood. Still going to try getting in to see doctor today to make sure they are ok and get something prescribed because they weren't cheap

I'm on omeprazole as well and it's amazing! I can actually sleep at night rather than spending hours sitting up feeling like I'm going to puke - it really was life changing getting that prescription as I'd suffered with heartburn for ages. I figure pregnancy is a short time so it's not going to do too much long term damage.

Claphands · 23/12/2019 05:57

I had terrible heartburn when I was pregnant and was prescribed Ranitidine-I didn’t know it had been recalled since though, it worked a treat for me and I only needed half the dose I was prescribed .

Thoughtlessinengland · 23/12/2019 05:59

Much to say. I’d been popping indigestion tablets like Rennie and Gaviscon like candy right up till 35 weeks (ie around now). Told midwife that I must be chock full of calcium from them and still acid reflux waking me up every fucking night. She got GP to prescribe me ranitidine and guess what I am totally good now. No more 10 Rennie a day, no more waking up three times a night with burning liquid in my mouth and throat, peaceful sleep and overall wellness as I wait to give birth. Sometimes over the counter won’t do it. Get a prescription.

Thoughtlessinengland · 23/12/2019 06:00

And def discusses the recalled thing and GP was v clear and confident about prescribing it at a low dose

nikdan123 · 23/12/2019 10:28

Managed to get into the doctors this morning and he prescribed me Omeprazole so fingers crossed they work

That's good I hope it works for you, heartburn's awful. I think I'm going to have to go back to my GP as I asked for Omeprazole about a month ago as read it was safe in pregnancy. He told me he wouldn't prescribe it as couldn't guarantee it was safe. I just accepted it but might go back armed with some print outs because I'm really struggling without my usual Lansoprazole and it's only going to get worse the bigger I get. Hope you start feeling better soon!

Bol87 · 23/12/2019 14:27

The NHS website states explicitly omeprazole is safe in pregnancy. Any GPS refusing to prescribe it are going against the NHS’s own advice. Go back & show them the bloody website!

www.nhs.uk/medicines/omeprazole/

I get side effects from omeprazole sadly but if I didn’t, I’d take it in a heartbeat! Heartburn is just miserable & safely treatable! I’m gutted ranitidine has been pulled as that was the best solution for me!

I'm in the same boat, 27 weeks pregnant and the heartburn seems relentless and unbearable. Doesn't seem to matter what/how little I eat or when it's just constantly there. I take rennie tablets and Asda own heartburn liquid but it's hardly touching it and is making me miserable!

nikdan123 · 23/12/2019 19:45

I took a nexium last night that I bought from shop and I have felt like a new woman today bo heartburn in sight. Doctor did say not the take them as quite strong but has prescribed ones similar so definitely recommend seeing you gp @sprite25

I'm 38 weeks and I've had heartburn throughout my whole pregnancy but in the last 12 hours it's ramped up to the point where it's unbearable 😭 I thought it was supposed to ease off by now when the baby drops lower 😭
