Bartholin cyst

Hi all
I'm 38+2 and due a baby girl on New Year's Eve. I got a Bartholin cyst in very early pregnancy around 10 weeks which I had antibiotics for and it shrank down. I'd never had one before and it was infected and uncomfortable 24/7. It never completely went but up until 2 weeks ago it was painless. It has now got a little bigger and is painful in the evenings especially after a shower. I went back on antibiotics which I finished a week or so ago but they haven't made much difference and it's not infected and hasn't changed in size or got bigger. I have told my midwife but she didn't examine me or seem concerned. I am just a bit worried about giving birth with it. Has anyone given birth with one before?

You poor thing, no advice, but it sounds painful, have you spoken to your GP for advice. Good luck I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you! Yes it was the GP who prescribed me antibiotics and said they wouldn't Lance it due to the infection risk at this stage unless it got really badly infected and the antibiotics didn't work. He didn't advise what to do if it stayed the same but it's not consistently sore or getting bigger so I'm unsure what to do!

I had one from about 20 weeks, midwife didn't look and said it's normal pregnancy oedema. At 34weeks I saw a new midwife and by this time it hurt walk and I couldn't sit on it. It was the size of a golf ball. The midwife looked and advised me to see a gp that day. Luckily it had started to discharge so the gp emptied it. I didnt take antibiotics as I work at my gp surgery and I'm a nurse so know the signs to watch for. I looked online and they advise a warm bath to soak the area 3-4times a day for at least 15mins. I'm now 37weeks. Go back to your gp, get advice. I really feel for you.

Thank you. It's not sore to sit on, doesn't have a head and I can walk okay. It's about pea sized or smaller. I have left a message with my midwife and if they don't get back to me I will call the GP tomorrow. I have tried warm compresses and baths but no joy! I'm just worried about labour and birth with it. Did it hurt when I was drained? The thought makes me feel sick!

Hello I can sympathise. I have had bartholin cysts in and off for 3 years how. I have had anaesthetic and surgery on it twice now which is not possible in pregnancy and countless antibiotics. It always seems to come back but things that help me are sitz baths and healing soothing ointments on it such as tea tree oil and coconut oil and witch hazel. I’m unsure how it is going to affect my labour as well, and whether I will need a C section because of it...best of luck, just keep going to your GP but unfortunately there is not much they can do for them while you are pregnant. Sex makes mine worse so possibly avoid sex the week or 2 before your labour to give the cyst a break from friction so it is not more inflamed that it needs to be?
