So 1st pregnancy and im roughly 5 weeks. First appointment is 2nd Jan with midwife which i believe will be form filling. Has anyone booked an early scan? It doesn't seem real yet!

Only because of bleeding and threatened miscarriage for more information.
Nothing to see at 5 weeks really.
NHS won’t do it, private scan possibly a waste of money so early on.

I had a scan at 7 weeks just to reassure myself that everything was well. It was like seeing a jelly bean in my belly but was also quite special!

I had a scan at 8 weeks because the appointment was sent through much to early. It was just a blob; looked nothing like a baby, and was too small for proper measurements so I had to go back a month later.

I think they're worth it. I could clearly see a baby shape at 7/8 weeks. This was at 9 weeks and 4 days

I had a scan at 8 weeks, made it seem so real, seeing baby and hearing heartbeat.
Then we told our parents!

I also had a scan around 17 weeks privately, which myOH wouldn't come to because 'I waS being OTT'
But it was the best scan I ever had, baby was moving lots, sucking toes, arching back, throwing head back, I loved it.

My 20 week NHS scan was awful, the woman was horrible to me, shirty because baby wasn't in right position and she couldn't get all the measurements.
Asked for a picture and she refused.
Actually complained about it in the end.

I had a private scan at 9 weeks as I wanted to check everything was OK before telling family. It didn’t look like much but we could see the heartbeat which was lovely

Nelbert19 · 15/12/2019 21:46

I booked an early scan for 8 weeks back when I was 4 weeks because I couldn’t believe it was real either!

Since then, I’ve had 3 scans for a ruptured cyst (heartbeat seen on the last one!) and morning sickness has well and truly kicked in, so definitely feeling real now! Private scan booked for next week, but I don’t feel like I need it anymore.

I think if you can spare the money, there’s no harm in having a private scan - definitely made things feel more real to me. 12 weeks is such a long time when you’re so excited!

@nelbert19 Thank you i think im 6 weeks so dont know if its too early to have a scan. My partner goes away for xmas so wanted one before he goes, but dont know if it will show anything

A word of warning with an early scan! I thought I was 7 wks from last missed period, so easily viable to have an early scan. I went and it came back inconclusive as there was no heartbeat. A terrible week of waiting and my gp sent me to the epu where a heart beat was present. I was dated back by 2 weeks. Please don't go too early as it can do the complete opposite of what you want it to do!

Thank you x

Good advice from VCP88.
The other important thing to remember is that an early scan only tells you what is happening right now. It cannot predict how things will progress. You need to work out if this is actually reassurance for you.

Everest1 · 16/12/2019 12:34

@nanmumandmidwife thank you. I just don't feel like its real yet but i think on everyone's advice i will wait for my scan date. Im seeing the midwife on 2nd of Jan but believe thats just form filling x

I booked an early scan privately around 6 weeks and found out I was having twins! I’m very glad I booked it rather than waiting for a later date. I had had previous miscarriages and was feeling really unwell - I thought something was wrong.

Michette · 16/12/2019 13:00

I went for early scan after bleeding at 5 weeks and couldn’t see anything but an empty sac. It left me even more anxious than before. I would wait 8 weeks to go to. So you are sure you will see something and a heartbeat otherwise you will just wait for the next one wondering why you can’t see anything or no heartbeat when in fact it is normal....

Thanks everyone 😊 x
