Cyclizine Hydrochloride 50mg question

Has anyone else taken cyclizine hydrochloride 50mg for awful all day sickness in pregnancy ? I saw a doctor at the hospital after my 12 week scan who prescribed me it because the sickness and nausea has been affecting my day to day life. They seem to help a little as I'm being sick less but do still feel it. Are they safe to take though ? I just worry because when I told 2 of the ladies I work with they were like oh my gosh you shouldn't be taking them in the 1960's anti sickness tablets caused a lot of issues for mother and babies. Surely they wouldn't still prescribe tablets knowing they were likely to harm your baby would they ? Starting to think I've done more harm than good by taking them now.

Hello - cyclizine is perfectly safe in pregnancy and has been used for decades so if they’re helping, do continue to take it.

Medical professionals are VERY cautious with drugs used in pregnancy and would not prescribe them if they were unsafe (unless they had very good reason, at which point the risks would be thoroughly explained to you so that you can make the decision of whether to take it eg anti epileptic drugs)

What a ridiculous thing for the women in work to say. Why would they scare you like that? Why do they think they know more than your doctor - OBVIOUSLY a doctors not going to prescribe you a medicine that harms your baby!! Even if he’s a psychopath that doesn’t care about patients, he’d get sued to high heavens! Ridiculous

They aren't anything like the tablets that caused the problems in 1960's. Have been used for many years with no recorded issues. I agree with above poster, HCPs are very cautious to say anything about drugs in pregnancy because they can't do specific clinical trials in pregnant people. But as far as the evidence for cyclizine goes its safe to use.

Thank you both I did think surely a doctor wouldn't prescribe something that would harm a baby. Xx

Quite safe .

Cyclizine is considered safe to take during pregnancy. I took it - found out I was allergic to it - and was prescribed a different anti sickness. I have just come off my meds at 20 weeks. I also took anti sickness meds with baby 2 and 3 as well up to about the same time.

The ladies at your work were talking about a specific drug used back in the 60's. Absolutely ridiculous to bring this up and worry you. Cyclizine is one of the first drugs they will use these days and if that doesn't help they will prescribe others to use either alongside it or instead of.

Due to ethical reasons no drug is fully tested on pregnant woman however some are considered safer than others and after many many years I would trust the doctors and other health care professionals over some gossiping woman.

I hope you feel better with the sickness soon x

I was on cyclizine for about a month with second baby. I’m not really sure it made much difference to me but I was prescribed it after a hospital admission for dehydration. Obviously nothing is without risk but you have to weigh it up against the effects to you of continued sickness and being dehydrated. My own experience is I was sick throughout the pregnancy and lost a stone in first few weeks. But baby was born at 39 weeks (spontaneously) and was 8lb 9oz so he didn’t suffer for all my struggles!

I took Cyclizine for very bad sickness in my first pregnancy and. Currently taking it now for my second pregnancy. I could not eat or drink without it. My DD is absolutely fine xx

Taken cyclizine all the way through including regularly 3 times a day. Baby is growing lovely and currently 60th percentile at 36 weeks. Without that little tablet I wouldn't of been able to function for 9 months.

Cyclizine is the first drug of choice for pregnancy sickness. It is safe and can be initiated by a GP.
If it's not working well enough, there are further safe options too, so don't suffer in silence.

I didn't take Cyclizine but I did take Promethazine which is very similar. I had no choice, I was so ill and I felt dehydration was more of a risk to the baby than the (virtually non-existent) risk from the medication
