Omeprazole & nausea

I’ve been on omeprazole since 8 weeks pregnant due to HG and the acid that’s come with severe vomiting. It works a treat for the acid, I have no complaints there. But I think it’s making me feel more ill..

I’m 26 weeks now & vomiting under control with meds. But I’ve been struggling with continued extreme nausea.. figured it was just part & parcel of the HG.

I accidentally ran out of omeprazole last Thursday & couldn’t get some until Monday evening. Over the long weekend, I noticed a marked reduction in my nausea (although terrible heartburn) & it had me pondering. So I’ve been experimenting over the week & sure enough, the bad nausea comes back after taking it & goes when I have a day off it..

Has anyone else had this side effect? Is it in my head?! While the heartburn is really quite unpleasant, I’ll take it over the nausea!

I started off on ranitidine which worked just as well but my doc swapped it due it being pulled for a health scare.. is it still unavailable?

Thanks Smile

Try Gaviscon for the acid reflux! I'm only just newly PG but I've always had reflux and Gaviscon is the best. Also it's safe during pregnancy. I used to get nausea a lot from having low blood pressure and Gaviscon actually helped that too. I recommend aniseed flavour xx

I hate Gaviscon 😂 it’s vile.. when I was at the height of my Hyperemesis, I would literally projectile vomit it back up. Probably where my hatred comes from. Hence why I got put on meds that stop stomach acid production altogether as I was in agony from all the vomiting .. but it’s frustrating they seem to be making me more nauseous..

I’ll keep of the meds for a few more days to fully evaluate it’s not just a coincidence! If needs be, I will suffer through pain for less nausea!

I have acid reflux and was put on it and had to come off it after less than a week because I felt so sick the whole time and had really bad spins. Went on ranatidine instead.

babymummytobe · 14/12/2019 22:36

I've actually heard the opposite. That it can help with nausea, even if you don't really have reflux. I don't know what to believe. I'm 34 weeks and still suffering from terrible nausea and some vomiting.

The consultant advised me to take omeprazole for a week and to see if it helps my nausea and I think it has a bit. I feel less sick when I wake up in the morning. It's not a huge change though. I would say I feel the most sick after breakfast every day. I often have to make myself sick after breakfast in order to feel less nauseous. It sucks. Does anyone else have this ?

I think if you've definitely noticed that you feel less nauseous when you don't take omeprazole, then don't take it. I just can't say I've had the same experience. But I'm not 100 percent sure it's helping me either. My nausea is really dependant on the day. Some days are better, others worse.

It sucks ! And I would choose heartburn any day over constant nausea..

You could mention it and see if you could try ranitidine?

McHelenz · 14/12/2019 23:35

Ranitidine is a no go in a lot of areas due to a nationwide recall.

I am 36 weeks pregnant and have has cyclizine since week 6. I then started on omeprazole about 3 weeks ago on top of the cyclizine as i was being sick in my sleep and waking up choking.

The pairing of both of them is really taking the edge off.

McHelenz · 14/12/2019 23:36

Also don't go from omeprazole to gaviscon, it's like down grading.

babymummytobe · 14/12/2019 23:56

@McHelenz are you serious ?? How are you surviving this ? This sounds so severe. You poor poor woman. I hope you get complete relief soon.

McHelenz · 15/12/2019 11:57

@babymummytobe yea it's been pretty horrible! But I haven't had to be admitted with dehydration so I just assumed I wasn't as bad as some people! Just keep thinking the end is soon.

LouH1981 · 15/12/2019 20:00

Ugh, sounds like you can’t win! Poor thing.
I had terrible heartburn with my now 3 week old. Like you I was vomiting the acid up.
I took omeprazole too. I didn’t find it made me nauseous but it did give me terrible stomach cramps, sulphur burps and diahorreah. So I’d take it every 2/3 days and suffer the consequences (my consultant eventually told me off for this!)
I asked for ranitadine but they wouldn’t prescribe it due to the recent recall so I went back to Gaviscon and also a LOT of milk before bed time.
Good luck xx

Dr273 · 15/12/2019 21:42

Haven't had that, but omeprazole made me hallucinate and black out of fractions of a second, so I'd wake up in the middle of doing something and have to work out where I was again...

fantasmasgoria1 · 15/12/2019 21:48

I take lanzoprazole which is virtually the same as omeperazole when I have needed to take diclofenac. I sometimes take it if I feel nauseous and it really helps! Some medications have different effects on different people!

buddhababy2019 · 16/12/2019 00:30

I was on omeprazole for 2 years before I was pregnant and it was amazing for stopping acid reflux BUT it made me so ill in other ways - I now have really bad digestive issues, can't tolerate gluten or dairy and struggle to absorb several vitamins. I really wish doctors wouldn't give out this drug so readily as the long term side effects can be quite nasty (not everyone gets them, I understand that). I believe at one point the Australian health organisation was even looking at banning them because of they issues they can cause.
