Tiny baby / first size clothes

Is tiny baby/first size clothes (not entirely sure if I've got the names right, but the ones that go up to 6 or 7lbs)

Are they even worth buying - or does it make more sense just to go straight to buying newborn (up to 9 or 10lbs)

I understand with twins who are usually smaller + born abit earlier but this is just one baby (sadly, was hoping for twins!😂)

Depends on you're baby's weight. Dd was measuring small and had to be delivered at 38 weeks. Tiny baby clothes absolutely hung off to her and she didnt grow into them for a couple of months. My friend had a 9lb baby who went straight into 1 month plus and rapidly into 1-3 months.

I had always assumed/thought tiny baby sizes were for smaller babies eg born too early.

I've got about 10 newborn onesies and vests. Everything else is 0-3 months. I'm due today so hoping this is ok! 😆

breadandnutterpudding · 12/12/2019 16:36

My son was 6lb 4oz and petite. Newborn clothes were far too big for him so had to rush out and get loads of tiny baby clothes which fitted him nicely with a bit of room to grow. He wore them for a good month. In pregnancy he was always average/a little smaller so thought newborn would have been ok! I'd base it on yours and your other half's height and build as to whether you should get tiny baby clothes.

chloxox08 · 12/12/2019 16:37

@thatwasMauijustmessingaround that's what I thought too but hearing conflicting views! Think I might just get a few babygrows and vests to be on the safe side and if we need anymore I'll send the fiancé to the shop Grin

Oh and he was only 5 days early.

chloxox08 · 12/12/2019 16:37

Not due for ages yet I'm just curious as I've been gifted a few items already from family and some are tiny baby Smile

Unless you know your baby is going to be small I'd just buy the newborn ones.

OhWellThatsJustGreat · 12/12/2019 16:39

My son was measuring smack bang in the middle then came 3 weeks early, even tiny baby was too big for him for at least 2 weeks, he's now 5 months and finally fits in the 0-3 stuff we got him. He wore his "new born" leaving hospital outfit yesterday Grin

Amanduh · 12/12/2019 16:39

My son was 2 weeks late and almost 8lb but newborn swamped him! He was just little. We had to go and buy tiny baby size!

babysnowman · 12/12/2019 16:40

I think tiny baby is different from first size/ newborn? DD was 4 weeks early so we did need tiny baby but only went out and bought them after she was born and she was only in them for a couple of weeks. I would just get first size/ newborn but no harm to get some 0-3 just in case you have a big baby and if not, they will grow into them anyway. I thought 0-3 would fit any baby but they are huge on them compared to the newborn size stuff!!

2shepherds · 12/12/2019 17:08

Both of mine went straight into 0-3 months. The newborn would have been too small. I am about 5ft and DH is 5 ft 7. I always thought you only need tiny baby if your baby is early or is born particularly small.

lioness88 · 12/12/2019 17:28

I bought newborn sizes for DD, some of them were too small so I donated them to the hospital. She was 8lb 5oz. I think tiny baby sizes are for very small babies? DD grew out of newborn within a couple of weeks.

Boymummy3 · 12/12/2019 17:47

I've only ever bought 0-3 my first was 7lb 11 and 2nd was 9lb 8 and 0-3 fit both of them fine ( the babygrows was maybe a little long on first baby but I just put socks over to stop his legs coming up inside them) never crossed my mind to buy nb or tiny baby but as others have said it depends as well if you know your having a small baby etc.. My 3rd is on the top line so again I've bought 0-3 because I very much doubt nb will fit but suppose you neve know untill they are born. Nothing wrong with getting a couple of each size though to be prepared x

randomsabreuse · 12/12/2019 17:48

My first needed tiny baby for about 3 weeks. 6.13 but long and leggy. My 2nd was 8lb and needed 0-1 month from the beginning although some of the newborn stuff that was up to 10lb fit nicely

PrayingandHoping · 12/12/2019 17:53

I'd wait and see what size your baby is measuring

My baby was measuring small and born at 37 weeks (induced) weighing 4lb9. So straight into tiny baby clothes

She wore them around 4 weeks until she was around 6lbs and then she was too long and moved into newborn

Tiny baby clothes are labelled for up to 5lbs on the ones we bought

But different places label differently! She's now in newborn at weighed 6lb6 last week. Come brands newborn fit perfectly and others are swamping her

PrayingandHoping · 12/12/2019 17:54

"First sized" clothes from next btw are huge! Def not tiny baby. They fit her now

PrayingandHoping · 12/12/2019 17:55

The newborn clothes she's in now are labelled between 7-7lbs8

10lb clothes I have are labelled up to 1 month

goingtoneedabiggercar · 12/12/2019 17:57

Depends on the baby, DS was 10lbs 10oz and straight into 0-3. I had one beautiful up to 1 month that I gave to someone I met in hospital as it was way too small for him.

NotwhereIshouldbe · 12/12/2019 18:02

Tiny baby is smaller then newborn. My baby was measuring bang on throughout my pregnancy so I assumed she would be around 7lb 7oz so only had 0-3 months and she arrived at 5lb 8oz so we had to go out and buy tiny baby clothes!

mummymummymummummum · 12/12/2019 18:15

Different shops call early sizes different things. So first size in one store is the same as newborn in another. So I'd really recommend checking the weight guidelines.

I needed smaller size cloths for both my girls (not twins). They were both born at 42 weeks at 7lb 2-3oz. Not Tiny Baby/Prem, the size bigger.

Redcrayons · 12/12/2019 18:22

I had 4lb twins and bought tiny baby clothes. We got a lot of wear out of them obviously.

as you've already been given them its o big deal, but I wouldn't buy anymore unless you know you're going to delivery early and have a small baby.
It really doesn't matter if the vests and baby grows are a bit too big at first.

firstimemamma · 12/12/2019 18:44

Always have some bits in tiny, newborn and 0-3 as you really never do know what they'll need in the early weeks!

My ds fitted into newborn for 2 weeks then needed 0-3. I'm so thankful I didn't have to go shopping for 0-3 month sized clothes when ds was 2 weeks old!

My niece on the other hand needed tiny baby when she was born. She was nearly 7 pounds. Mum and dad had nothing in tiny baby so a relative had to go and panic-buy for them. Trust me you don't want to be in that situation!

Just cover all bases and then you can relax. Smile

Bubblysqueak · 12/12/2019 18:58

Both mine were in tiny baby clothes, one at 5lbs 12 and the other at 6lbs4. I accidentally only took newborn/0-3 months for my second and it swamped him, I had to get my mum to bring a smaller size when she visited the hospital!

Bubblysqueak · 12/12/2019 18:59

Neither of mine were early either.

R2D2abc · 12/12/2019 19:00

I did use tiny baby size for DD but I bought them after coming home difronte hospital as I realised the other ones looked weird in her. I did use them for a few weeks only, you can easily find at any big supermarket so I wouldn't bother buying in advance just to not waste money, unless from scans I would appear again to have a 6 lb baby.
