I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hi All,

Sorry to everyone who is suffering. It’s really awful to have the gp’s be so blasé about the dehydration too.
We lost our wee one today at 17wks (due to chromosomal errors) and one of the biggest concerns was how low my blood pressure was coupled with the dehydration. I was given a bag of fluids almost instantly and they questioned why I hadn’t had them more frequently during the course of the pregnancy. I was still vomiting up until 2 days ago, but once everything was passed, I only feel mildly nauseous, most likely due to only 3hrs of bad sleep last night. So it does cure quickly!

Wishing you all an ever improving pregnancy, and a lifetime of joy that follows.

Oh @Melleebacca I’m so so sorry to hear this. Look after yourself and allow others to look after you too x

Bol87 · 24/01/2020 18:01

So so sorry to hear @Melleebacca - I was keeping everything crossed for you. Sending so much love & the biggest hug 🧡

Melleebacca · 24/01/2020 18:49

Thanks all. This was the outcome we were most prepared for, and it’s a bit of a blessing that we can now move on. The sadness will probably come in a few days, at the moment I’m just in a bit of a foodie heaven.

StayClosePooky · 24/01/2020 18:52

I'm so happy I've found this thread. The past 19 weeks have been pretty grim and a bit lonely, glad to see there's others like me!

LucindaE · 24/01/2020 19:52

Mellebacca I am so sorry. Like others, I was keeping all my digits crossed for you. What a heartbreaking thing for you and your lovely family. Life can be so unfair. You have always been so supportive to everyone else on this thread. Flowers Flowers
StayClosePooky Welcome. I am sorry that you are suffering. Here is my normal spiel, which may be familiar if you have read through part of the thread, and which I hope is useful for you. Are you on any anti emetics? How are the liquids staying down? Do they say you are in danger of dehydration? Things do get a lot better for most sufferers somewhere between weeks 15 and 21. Even the unlucky minority who suffer throughout almost never feel as bad later on as they do in the early stages. A good anti-acid can make a big difference. Some drinks and foods of a sort that have helped others: flat full sugar coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucozade, fizzy water, Elderflower water, Robinson's fruit drinks, fizzy orange, lemonade, Dr Pepper, Elderflower coridal and tonic water (eallison's tipple), 7Up, Iron Bru, soda water, ice cubes, chocolate milkshakes (maybe soya), cocoanut milk, orange squash and sips of orange juice if not too acid. Some foods of a sort: nibbles of chips and crisps, baked potatoes, cuppa soup, cheap ice cream, tinned fruit, slices of melon and mango, Scotch pancakes and biscuits. It might be worth investing in some kesostix if you don't have them already as while they are not the best test of dehydration, hospitals do take notice of their measurement of ketones. They are available from any chemists, as it might be a good idea to get them quickly, or online.

@Melleebacca I'm so sorry. Sending you so much love. Go easy on yourself, it's such a traumatic experience. There are no words which help heal but hope you find some comfort soon ❤️

@StayClosePooky welcome - we must be due date buddies!! It's horrible isn't it, but quite nice to know you're not suffering alone. I have a date for my section so I'm pretty much half way - can't believe I've even made it to this point!

LucindaE · 25/01/2020 19:54

kissingthebear Congratulations on reaching the halfway mark.

Thanks for the welcome @LucindaE @kissingthebear

I’m due 18th June, so 19 weeks, and from week 5 up until recently I haven’t kept much down. I was admitted just before Christmas for a week, they sorted my meds and now have some that are working better - Ondansetron and metoclopramide. I have to say that I am a lot better than I was, and generally keeping more stuff down than I’m being sick. I’m hoping I’ve come out the other side now but recognise how important support it for us all. Anyone else feel like they were going a bit mad? The doctors were all but useless except when I got admitted. Not sure why it needed to get to that point! The main issue I have now is going to the toilet without lactulose (sorry TMI!) and regaining weight as I lost 2 stone Confused

How is everyone today?

So sorry to hear of your loss @Melleebacca Thanks

sickandtiredofsick · 26/01/2020 19:17

I can’t do it anymore I just can’t I’ve cried the whole day I can’t do it I feel worse than ever and I’m exhausted I can’t do this

LucindaE · 26/01/2020 19:36

sickandtiredofsick You poor thing! Can they add any meds to the Onansedrtron and the Omprazole? Are flat full sugar coke, ice lollies and sips of the juice of tinned fruit no good at all today? It is very hard to get through this. Most say at some point that they can't stand it any more. Everyone agrees that sometimes you have to take it at an hour at a time.

StayClosePooky Never worry about TMI on here. Did you say that they had given you Lactulose? Two stone is a huge weight loss. It is very bad that so many have to end up in hospital before it's taken seriously.

@Melleebacca so so sorry, take care of yourself over the next few months & always know you can reach out to any of us when you're feeling low. Sending big hugs.

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 26/01/2020 19:51

@sickandtiredofsick you CAN do it! You are doing an amazing job, break your day up into sections it will help you get through it more. Go to bed early and hopefully tomorrow you will wake up with that fighting spirit to kick HG's ass another day!

sickandtiredofsick · 26/01/2020 20:02

I just feel so awful and I can’t stop crying the nausea is horrific and the ondansetron seems to stop me vomiting as much but the nausea is worse than ever and I’m struggling
The worst bit is my toddler I’m trying to stop breastfeeding but he’s having none of it so he’s screaming all the time and I’m dreading tomorrow with Dh going to work because feeding him drains me we’ve been giving bottles but he will down 6ozs then decide he needs breastmilk too and then goes crazy and I can’t take it but I cannot feed him

kissingthebear · 26/01/2020 20:56

@sickandtiredofsick I am so sorry you're struggling. I can't tell you how many times I've sobbed uncontrollably muttering the words "I can't do this, I wish I wasn't pregnant anymore"
How many weeks are you?
Xonvea hasn't cured me but it has really helped reduce nausea and level of vomiting. I'd highly recommend it and believe you can take alongside other meds. I had terrible food adversions before and couldn't even walk into the kitchen without being sick. I know it feels impossible, it's the hardest slog but you can do it x

sickandtiredofsick · 26/01/2020 21:28

I’m 9+2 it just seems to be getting worse and worse

abbs1 · 26/01/2020 22:47

@sickandtiredofsick I really sympathise with you. These weeks were just so hard and I would just cry daily to my husband that I was done and couldn't do it anymore as I was in hospital nearly every day for fluids and iv medication and just couldn't handle the sickness and nausea and not being able to eat. By week 12 I was so bad I was put in steroids along with ondansatron and metoclopromide and clexine on home visits to keep me out of hospital and that finally stopped a lot of sickness and nausea. I needed this till week 20 and then finally just pill form of ondansatron and metoclopromide worked for me. Im down to one metoclopromide a day at nearly 31 weeks.
I would ask to see a gynaecologist consultant if you do end up in hospital as they were the ones that said steroids as nothing else worked properly and I was so poorly.
Stay strong hun. It's awful and no one who hasnt been through it really understands but I really hope you start to feel better soon.

justtheonethen · 27/01/2020 07:10

@sickandtiredofsick massive hug. It is awful. Sounds like you need more meds.

@abbs1 do you mind sharing what dose you were on and how long and how you tapered off steroids? I'm struggling to go below 25mg.

boulevardofbrokendreams · 27/01/2020 10:07

@sickandtiredofsick I found I was at the worst around 9/10 weeks...hang on in there and just take it a day at a time. Are you getting any support with looking after your toddler?

sickandtiredofsick · 27/01/2020 13:30

No Dh works full time he’s self employed so time off isn’t really easy I’ve given the iPad to ds to play toddler games to try and give me some time on the sofa but I feel horrific
I’m meant to have another appt at epu Friday but I can go sooner if need to I just feel absolutely awful

abbs1 · 27/01/2020 14:34

@justtheonethen week 6 cyclizine didn't work. Given pill form ondansatron 8mg didn't work. Still vomiting all day and night. Week 7 EPU every 48 hours for iv ondansatron 4mg and 3 bags of fluid. Week 9 given metoclopromide 10mg to take alongside ondansatron but didn't work so continued to EPU and A and E at weekends for iv meds and fluids. 12 weeks gynaecologist consultant said to go on IV steroids for 1 week at home along with iv ondansatron and pill form metoclopromide and clexine injections. Nurse attended twice a day for this. Then put on prednisolone 30mg reducing by 5mg every 3 days along with pill form ondansatron and metoclopromide. This worked but as soon as the steroids ran out I was back to square one. IV steroids etc was repeated and then prednisolone decreased over 5 days along with other meds and this finished at 20 weeks. I continued on the ondansatron and metoclopromide 3x a day and it worked.
Some days I was still really nauseous and did vomit a few times. Week 25 stopped night time meds. 28 weeks stopped lunch time meds. Now just on morning meds and doing ok at nearly 31 weeks. It's been a hell of a ride to say the least but I've survived so far. I wanted to quit many times but my husband has been an absolute rock and has been so supportive to get me this far.
I've had extra scans and been under a consultant since week 16 weeks as well for monitoring.

justtheonethen · 27/01/2020 14:38

@abbs1 thank you, that's really helpful. I started on 40mg and managed to get down to 25mg. Reducing every 7 days. As soon as I went to 20mg I was in bits so I've gone back up to 25mg.
I'm still on ondansetron, metoclopromide and cyclizine at the moment too. Getting some nausea at 25mg but not unmanageable.
