I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

justtheonethen and abbs1 I am so glad that steroids have helped you so much. I didn't know that about their being used for women suffering from recurrent miscarriages. BeautyandtheBump I do hope you feel a bit better today...And everyone else whose been feeling really bad.

Just surviving each day as it comes, but feeling so meh about it! I'm 18 weeks and still not feeling any movements from babe- just wish I could feel them soon as feel it'll help it all seem real and not just like I'm suffering some awful illness in vain!!!!

boulevardofbrokendreams · 18/01/2020 19:17

Sorry I’ve been a bit absent recently - I seem to have a good day or two then a terrible few days. Sickness is subsiding (1/2/3 times a day) but the nausea is killing me. Hope all is well with everyone else

LucindaE · 19/01/2020 13:25

kissingthebear I hope you feel the movements soon. It seems to vary so much between individuals and even pegnancies. It makes such a huge differnce for a sufferer's morale, as you say.
boulevardofbrokendreams I am glad that the vomiting episodes have lessened, though it is dismal that the nausea is so bad. Sorry, my invariable question: remind me if you find an anti-acid helps? I know there has been some concerns expressed about Ranitidine, with GP's varying in how seriously they take them.

OP posts:
Melleebacca · 19/01/2020 18:12

I had my first vomit free day in 9wks yesterday, so I’m counting that as a win. The nausea meant I was lying still in bed most of the day. Just gone 16wks. We’re currently in the limbo of waiting for the amnio results. The doctor who did the ultrasound refused to tell us anything during the exam and we will get all the results in one lot. I’m looking forward to having some certainty in my life again soon.
DD1 spent Saturday morning in A&E after getting an infection in her eyebrow, so we’re well sick of hospitals at the moment.

Hope the silence is due to people feeling ok 👍

boulevardofbrokendreams · 19/01/2020 19:14

@LucindaE No I haven’t got an antacid - what should I be asking my doctor for?

justtheonethen · 19/01/2020 19:19

@boulevardofbrokendreams omeprazole helps for me.

LucindaE · 19/01/2020 20:15

Melleebacca I am glad that you had a sickness free day. The stress of course, makes it worse. Thinking of you.
boulevardofbrokendreams It might help with the nausea. Omprazole is considered to be good on here. I used to be palmed off with Gaviscon by my GP, but it only worked for half an hour at a time and can make you feel bloated.

Hi guys, hope I can join in.

Don't know if I have HG as such but 8 weeks and also have a long standing vomiting disorder called CVS. So pregnancy nausea and vomiting plus that is making it really difficult to function and am really struggling. Luckily I'm not working atm so am able to rest so I know it could be a lot worse, but still bloody hard! 😞😞

LucindaE · 20/01/2020 21:17

Miltonj Welcome. Sorry to hear you are suffering. Are you on any anti emetics? How are the liquids staying down? Do they say you are in danger of dehydration? Here is my usual spiel, which may be familiar, as you have read the thread. Things do get a lot better for most sufferers somewhere between weeks 15 and 21. Even the unlucky minority who suffer throughout almost never feel as bad later on as they do in the early stages. A good anti-acid can make a big difference. Some drinks and foods of a sort that have helped others: flat full sugar coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucozade, fizzy water, Elderflower water, Robinson's fruit drinks, fizzy orange, lemonade, Dr Pepper, Elderflower coridal and tonic water (eallison's tipple), 7Up, Iron Bru, soda water, ice cubes, chocolate milkshakes (maybe soya), cocoanut milk, orange squash and sips of orange juice if not too acid. Some foods of a sort: nibbles of chips and crisps, baked potatoes, cuppa soup, cheap ice cream, tinned fruit, slices of melon and mango, Scotch pancakes and biscuits. It might be worth investing in some kesostix if you don't have them already as while they are not the best test of dehydration, hospitals do take notice of their measurement of ketones. They are available from any chemists, as it might be a good idea to get them quickly, or online.

Hi all, pleased to report all was well at 20 week scan, I hadn't felt much at all but a few days later lots of kicks. Reducing the cyclizine is going well, though I will have no hesitation about going back on the full dose of needed. Sorry to hear others suffering more.

Kissing the bear I was worrying a little as hadn't felt much and it does make it all real but 20-21 weeks and kicks are unmistakable so hopefully you will start to feel something soon.

Beauty and the bump, I really felt for you reading your post, it is so hard.

kissingthebear · 21/01/2020 08:16

Glad all went well & the scan - what a relief. It's helpful reaching these milestones and you're over halfway @Whatnext11
I have my scan in a few weeks and it's the next little flag in the road for me. Think I'm worrying so much about movements because of how early I felt my first, and how strong his kicks were. Anyhow, did go in at weekend in a panic and they listened to the heartbeat with a Doppler to try and give me some reassurance. Didn't help that I felt really good and almost normal that day so had gone into meltdown that my symptoms had disappeared overnight. Turns out I just accidently overdosed on my meds!!!

@Melleebacca thinking of you 💖

I'm attempting to go into work for a few hours today, I'm taking mat leave super early as I'm feeling so awful so have got to start a handover. Last week I couldn't manage it at so hopefully I can myself there today. Just once a week for a few hours if I can, so it's not horrendous but it does mean train into London. Vast majority of office don't know I am PG either as just can't face all the commentary right now. Was so sick last night. Think it's just the stress of worrying about going in and wondering how I'll get through meetings while managing to look "normal"

Hello to everyone - another day, is another day close to the end. X

Miltonj · 21/01/2020 17:13

@LucindaE thanks 😊. In the past I have taken cyclzine, ondanestron and omeprozole. The first two make me very dizzy, tired and anxious! And omeprozole I find has had little effect. I have mainly had my CVS in control for some time, but pregnancy had thrown me over the edge again! Thanks for the suggestions. Things that help me are lemonade and fizzy sweets but I feel guilty for having so much sugar during pregnancy and not enough good stuff, especially bad when I'm finding it so difficult to brush my teeth!! I hope you've all had better days today, it really sucks, but grateful to be pregnant ☺️

sickandtiredofsick · 21/01/2020 18:14

Are glycerin suppositories safe in first trimester ?
I’m having the most awful time I’m so bloated I look six months pregnant and it’s constipation from ondansetron
I was on movicol but it’s clearly not enough
My gp hasn’t called back to say if glycerin is safe or not
I’ve tried hot water and lemon , dates, lactulose too I’m feeling panicking and depressed I am scared to come off the tablets as sickness so bad but I feel like my intestines will burst

Bol87 · 21/01/2020 18:27

@sickandtiredofsick - might be worth talking to your docs about upping the movicol? I’m on laxido which is the same thing, different brand, and sometimes I need two/three a day. I’m suffering cos ondansetron & a max dose of iron! You can technically take up to 8 a day for a bowel obstruction but obviously do not do this without advice!

(My Grandpa was put on movicol when he was diagnosed with bowel cancel & he misread the packet and took all 8 in 12 hours .. well you can imagine 😭😷)

The NHS suggests to not use glycerin supps without consulting a doctor.. typical pregnancy advice 😫 could you get an appointment tomorrow or maybe speak to 111?!

Hope everyone is doing as well as they can, sorry to be quiet at the mo, life is so busy with a toddler, illness, starting to slowly handover at work .. I’m still nauseous as all hell but getting by. The aches & pains of the 3rd trimester have well & truly kicked in now. I’d forgotten how uncomfortable these final 8/9 weeks are! Still, there is light at the end of this long tunnel now!

sickandtiredofsick · 21/01/2020 19:18

The gp called back and said it’s fine to use if I need to so may give it a try but a bit nervous to

LucindaE · 21/01/2020 21:30

sickandtiredofsick I am glad the doctor says they are OK in the first tri. Numbers of women on here have found them useful. Good luck for getting your bowels moving again.
Bol87 Poor you for those aches and pains of the third tri. I am happy that you are on the home stretch, eiher trotting or waddling - I felt I was a great waddler myself, anyway, quite like a duck - towards the finishing line.

OP posts:
sickandtiredofsick · 22/01/2020 11:34

I know it’s the ondansetron but I’m so so sick I can’t manage without it. Just going to try and increase the movicol and lactulose to keep on top of things now
Avoided the glycerin by having a warm as allowed bath and doing abdominal massage which really helped I was in so much pain though and feel a million times better today but conscious it’s easy to get back into the same place if I don’t keep up with laxatives

My sickness is horrendous and I keep coming over shaky and feeling dizzy and everything is too bright and I feel so hungry but can’t manage much I think it may be low blood sugar

boulevardofbrokendreams · 22/01/2020 17:22

My sickness is horrendous and I keep coming over shaky and feeling dizzy and everything is too bright and I feel so hungry but can’t manage much I think it may be low blood sugar
@sickandtiredofsick This is EXACTLY me today. Sending strength.

I know it’s not their fault but is anyone so fed up with doctors who have no understanding of HG? I asked for omeprazole (which thankfully they said yes to) but then I got the usual spiel of sickness and nausea are a part of pregnancy, it’ll start easing up now you are 12 weeks etc. All I want to scream is NO! What I’m going through is not the norm! It’s likely to continue! I threw up until the day I gave birth to DC1! Ahhhhhh!! Sorry for the rant, I just feel like no one understands how lonely and debilitating this all is.

LucindaE · 22/01/2020 17:24

sickandtiredofsick I am glad you got your bowels to move somehow, and plan to keep them open. Much sympathy to you and all dragging through bad days.

kissingthebear · 23/01/2020 19:53

@boulevardofbrokendreams it sounds like you're having such a terrible time, sending you love & hugs! I know, it's awful when you feel like people aren't understanding or sympathetic. I'm lucky I had a fairly good GP this time but did speak to a different GP in desperation before I could get an appointment with the kind one, and he was TERRIBLE. "Well, you're urinating so you're not dehydrated. Just drink, just eat small portions". In the end I gave up because it was like talking to a brick wall and I knew I could just battle it out for a few days and default to the better one.

I did have to pay to privately see an obstetrician who was LOVELY and gave me a treatment plan straight away. But I hear you, it's frustrating!! My midwife is mature and hasn't even heard of the medication I'm on and wasn't au fait with hyperemesis of the gravity of how much I was throwing up.

There is sympathy and help out there but agree it isn't always easy to find x

LucindaE · 23/01/2020 21:50

Mumsnet has only just let me on.
boulevardofbrokendreams and kissingthebear Much sympathy about ignorance about Hyperemesis. It can be really isolating and infuriating, and is very unfortunate in medics.
