Hi,

I'm 7 weeks pregnant and I'm classed as a geriatric mother confused.

Can anyone tell me what to expect in terms of care? Am I likely to have more scans/appointments due to my age?

Thanks in advance x

Hello I am 18 weeks pregnant and I turned 39 in November its so silly to be labelled as a geriatric mum considering there are more people having children at the ages of 35+ now more than ever. Anyway this is my 4th baby and I am not having anymore scans or midwife appointments than I did 13 years ago with my 1st child. You will only have extra care if it is a high risk pregnancy. Is this your 1st child? X

Hi Ele38,

Yes, it's my first baby. I had a miscarriage 7 years ago though.

Really unsure what to expect overall and being labeled 'geriatric' has put the fear of god into me! x

I'm nearly 38 in my area the midwife said they don't class you as geriatric till 40+ and even then it's just to assess if you need extra monitoring etc.

I'm 39, 40 on Friday! Currently 40+3 pregnant. I've had nothing extra in terms of appointments and scans. Everything has been fine, although I'm a lot more tired than with my first!
Good luck and congrats!

I was PG at 39. No extra appointments.

I know you are scared clare but everything will be great its perfectly normal to be worried especially as it's your first, even now with my fourth every twinge or bit of spotting I had put the fear of god in me but have now learnt to relax and enjoy the pregnancy easier said than done I know . once you have had first scan and seen your gorgeous baby and the heartbeat you will be able to relax a little bit. If you need any advice or any concerns feel free to get in touch. Xx

Thank you Ele38, that's very kind.

You're right, I should totally relax and enjoy it but my god it's a worrying time. I had no idea I'd be this worried, I thought I'd get pregnant and sail along in a bubble of happiness (which I am as well!) :) x

Sorry, one more thing. I have my booking appt Friday morning and I know they do a lot of tests etc... do I get the results there and then or will I have the torture of waiting? Confused

V1ckyCh1ck · 05/12/2019 16:08

Hey Clarabelle, I'm the same as you. 39 and currently 13+2. First baby and can't wait although not entirely sure what I'm letting myself in for!! Had my first scan last Wednesday and was given some information straight after. I guess depends on your hospital but I then received a letter in the post with my results for Downs etc. three days later. They did say they would call if they found anything so I doubt you'll have to wait too long. Hope your appointment goes well. It's amazing seeing your baby for the first time.xx
