HELP!! Home birth booked but tested positive for GBS

I have a home birth booked as I have a serious hospital phobia due to previous medical negligence. I have just had the results of my Group B Strep test back and they are positive. Has anyone else been in this situation? Will I be able to get IV antibiotics at home?

i don't think you will be classed as a low risk pregnancy any more and will therefore be moved/transferred to a consultant led unit- sorry

On the homebirth UK site under the section entitled "you can't have a homebirth because", they talk about GBS and its implications for homebirth.

Good luck - you may have to get stroppy, but it is possible to have a homebirth when you are GBS+

you'll have to ask your midwife if she's able to give IV antibiotics at home. And you'll need a doctor to prescribe them.

I'm in Belgium and was able to have IV antibiotics at home, and still had a waterbirth. It was a very safe birth because my waters didn't break until the baby was born.

But I'm not sure if you can do this in the UK.

my baby also had to have regular check ups as well over the next few days including taking her temperature to check whether she was developing an infection.

Hi there - don't know if this is any help but I had homebirth with DD2, 10 days ago and it turns out that I am positive for GBS although I didn't discover this until 2 days after DD2 was born.

Basically my waters broke before I had any contractions so I was asked to go into hopsital for a swab / quick check. They said you're ok, go home and see what happens in next 24 hours. In short, I went home and contractions started and DD2 was born about 7 hours after I left hospital, at home as planned.

Then TWO DAYS later I got a phone call from the hospital saying "your swab has come back as positive for GBS so you need a course of antibiotics before you give birth". I said "my DD is now 2 days old" and all they said was "oh. BEtter tell your midwive".

When I told my midwife she seemed to take it totally in her stride (she was cross with the hospital for telling me directly, cos she thought that I might have been worried unnecessarily) and just told me to keep an eye on DD2 in case she seemed to be getting poorly.

So I don't know what would have happened if I had got the swab result BEFORE I gave birth, but I get the feeling that a homebirth would still have been ok. Certainly my midwive wasn't in any way freaked out by the news - said loads of people are positive for GBS and told me not to worry!

Start looking into intramuscular injections of antibiotics it was the only solution I could find to have a homebirth with antibiotics. Short post as mn crashes on me if I do more than 3-4 lines!
