I always assumed a positive test would have a bold line just like the one on the left... so when this appeared I was a bit confused!

Yes, that's positive. Your test line is actually darker than your control line, indicating a very high level of hcg- these are called dye stealers- essentially you have do much pregnancy hormone that the test line is 'stealing' dye from the control line. When was your period due?
