Reassurance about eating an open piece of pre packed honeydew melon

Hi ladies, I am 16 weeks with my 3rd and just had a munch on some pre-cut honeydew melon that I bought last Friday from Sainsbury's sandwich section - it was opened and I kept it in the fridge for the weekend. I just read online about pregnant women avoiding eating cantaloupe and pre cut melons because of a listeria risk... now I am panicking a bit! Please help me alleviate my fears a little and tell me that I am worrying over nothing...😖🤔😱

Eeeek I ate loads of pre cut melon! I hadn't heard that. I'm sure you're fine, there must be far more dangerous things to do

dementedpixie · 02/12/2019 20:01

Was it in date? I'm sure you'll be fine. Was that an nhs site you read it on? (I doubt it)

Berrylove · 02/12/2019 20:04

The risk is super low for these things, so don’t worry you’ll be absolutely fine. The risk is the same as when you wasn’t pregnant just it’s obviously more dangerous if you were to pick up these bacteria now you are pregnant, but like I said, the likelyhood of that happening is super low.

Don't worry about it. I ate rare steak before I knew it wasn't allowed, and my baby is doing just fine!

Lol, thank you ladies! It was just reading from a news story about some deaths in Australia from cantaloupe melon that was contaminated with listeria, and caused deaths in several old people and a miscarriage... no mention of anything to do with honeydew melon though, nor was it from the NHS website. I think I am probably being a bit paranoid!Hmm

Yes, it went off today so it was in date. I have been a bit more lax about food in this pregnancy and ate some cooked crab when I was about 5 weeks that I worried about unnecessarily!

Cooked crab is fine, as is melon. Don't worry!

Honeydew melon is widely recommended as its high in folate. Please ignore scary stories from a country thousands of miles away!!! You will be completely fine. It’s also meant to help with keeping blood pressure stable, so I hear! A very good healthy snack. Enjoy!

That story was from 2018 and was attributed to weather conditions in Australia. Cooked crab is fine as is other cooked seafood
