Does breastfeeding hurt second time round

With my first I found breastfeeding horrendous and spoilt my enjoyment of being a new mother, after a few weeks it got easier. I am still breastfeeding now a bit but was planning on stopping soon. If I carried on breastfeeding a little bit until my baby is born will it mean it’s painless with my next baby or will it be easier any way because I’ve already done it once?

I stopped feeding my first while pregnant with my second. Like you I found breastfeeding painful for a few weeks with my first. With my second I only had a couple of days discomfort so it was much easier. Hopefully it will be the same for you.

Seaandsand83 · 30/11/2019 19:55

It was just as painful the second time around (for 10days) I'm afraid. But then there was 2 year gap in between stopping and starting again

Twickerhun · 30/11/2019 19:56

Second time around was much easier for me, I had a 10 month break between feeding each child and it was ok

TheGriffle · 30/11/2019 19:58

It will be uncomfortable still for a few days I think with number 2, you remember how to do it but the new baby needs to learn.

DownWentTheFlag · 30/11/2019 19:58

I fed my first, stopped completely for a while, then fed my second. Second time around the first thirty seconds or so of each feed still made my toes curl!

TheGriffle · 30/11/2019 19:59

I found with number 2 (4 year age gap) that I didn’t really get as engorged or had the let down feeling as much and second time round didn’t need as many breast pads etc as I didn’t leak as much.

ShowOfHands · 30/11/2019 19:59

Second time round was easy peasy. No pain at all.

ThanksAllTheSame · 30/11/2019 20:04

I found it much, much easier second time round. I was dreading it after 12 weeks of utter hell with DC1 but it was fine. A few days of discomfort and that was it.

R2D2abc · 30/11/2019 20:07

Had pain in my nipples even second time. Was so bad and bleeding. With my first I used nipple shields, I didn't want with my second. But I ended up second day after birth to buy them and was much better. I always used them for a few weeks but made a difference for me.

Didn't affect my supply and helped my healing.

userabcname · 30/11/2019 20:07

Currently feeding my second - he is 6 weeks old. Easy peasy this time - certainly no pain and no discomfort. Not reached for the nipple cream once.

holly40 · 30/11/2019 20:08

I'm expecting number two and really worrying about BF after being in so much pain last time for weeks. I stopped 4 years ago after feeding for a year. I'm more concerned about this than the labour part!

Sleeplesssleepseeker · 30/11/2019 20:10

Much less painful second time around for me. But I stopped BF DC1 in October and gave birth in January, so the gap was quite small. BF was just easier all round the second time to be honest. First time was horrendous!

DramaAlpaca · 30/11/2019 20:10

Breastfeeding was really easy with DC2, no discomfort at all.

CatflapFlapjack · 30/11/2019 20:14

I had a gap of a few months where I stopped breastfeeding DS and my DD was born. It was SO much easier the second time around. My nipples barely got sore and I only used nipple cream out of habit.
I still got the 10-second toe-curling thing when my let down was triggered but that only lasted a week or so.

Mammyloveswine · 30/11/2019 20:15

Second time it hurt but baby was a natural and after a week all was fine!

ThePolishWombat · 30/11/2019 20:20

DC1: agony due to tongue tie that went undiagnosed for ages.
DC2: No pain at all. Not even in the first few days.
DC3: Horrible pain in the first few days, cracked, bleeding nipples etc. But I spotted the obvious tongue tie on day 3, got it cut At a private clinic on day 7, and had no pain at all since.

Grafittiqueen · 30/11/2019 20:37

Just as sore 2nd time round for me sorry.

Jsh125 · 30/11/2019 23:18

If found breastfeeding insanely hard with number 1 for the first couple of months until it all clicked. Stopped feeding when nearly 4 months pregnant with number 2 (he stopped being interested) so had a 5 month break.
Number 2 was an absolute dream, nipples were sore for a couple of days while they got used to it again but nothing some magic lansinoh couldn't fix. She's 10 months so still going & has been easy as pie.

pottypotamus · 01/12/2019 16:38

Just as painful second time round, if not more for me.

PerspicaciaTick · 01/12/2019 16:43

Four year gap with mine and BFing no.2 was a fiddle compared to no.1

PerspicaciaTick · 01/12/2019 16:44

Oops posted too soon.
It was a fiddle because it took a while to find the best hold (across body on the right boob, rugby ball on the left). But it didn't hurt anywhere near as much as no.1

mybabyisteething · 01/12/2019 16:50

I fed my first for 2.5 years and the first 3 weeks were agony.

She was nearly 5 when DS was born.

He had a severe tongue tie, literally right to the tip (cut at 2 weeks) and i don't think i would've been able to feed him for so long if i hadn't already fed.

Feeding him was horrendous but i really believe my nipples had toughened up haha!

LittleAndOften · 01/12/2019 16:54

Initially horribly painful with number 2 (3 weeks old) but we discovered he had tongue tie. Since that was sorted its been a breeze (apart from him being nocturnal!).
