What do they do at early pregnancy unit regarding bleeding

Hi, I’m somewhere between 5-16weeks pregnant. Polycystic ovaries and irregular periods mean I don’t know how far I am. But I think it’s only a few weeks.
Anyway, I’ve started bleeding today, red bloody. Been to the gp and he’s got me an appointment on Saturday morning. But he didn’t really say what they will do and I’d just like to be able to prepare myself a little. Thank you in advance.

You’ll probably be given an internal ultrasound.

Hello OP

I believe it may depend on areas or country you live in but I had to be seen in the early pregancy unit and they complete an assessment and can do a scan if you are bleeding in my experience. I hope all goes well for Saturday. Are you having someone go with you?

crosser62 · 28/11/2019 16:11

Probably an internal scan.
May do bloods too.
Good luck x

It totally depends on the area/trust I think. As you are so unsure on dates they may do a blood test to check your HCG level and if high enough, offer a scan. They sometimes do an internal exam too to check your cervix. In my experience they don’t scan until your HCG level is high enough, or you are almost 7 weeks. Fingers crossed for you, OP.

Scan you, probably start with an abdominal ultrasound and if they can't see anything they'll move to an internal ultrasound. Possibly check your cervix too.

Thank you ladies. Would I need a full bladder for the scan do you think?
And no, DP will be staying at home with DS.

Flowers I'm sorry you're going through this.
They will ask you about lmp/length of cycle/about your recent symptoms. They will scan your tummy to see what is happening. If things are unclear they may give you an internal vaginal scan using a probe. It won't hurt but may feel cold. They will take measurements and check for a heartbeat. They may ask you to return in a week to rescan to see if there are changes. It is possible to experience a bleed in early pregnancy and still have a healthy baby. I hope it works out for you.

beminetonight · 28/11/2019 16:29

@QuestionableMushroom please take someone with you. Even if things are fine, it is best not to be on your own. Can someone else mind your DS so your DP can go with you?

Winterdaysarehere · 28/11/2019 16:31

Your bladder needs to be empty for an internal scan.

louisepx · 28/11/2019 16:34

Hey when I was bleeding they did a scan& bloods& then repeat bloods to see if the hormones are rising:) general questions etc. Hope all is well xxx

I too have pcos and out of three pregnancies I bled with 2. The first lasted 3 weeks. The second time lasted a day. All babies fine. The second time I was like you and didn't know how far along I was. I went to epau and got shouted at by the nurse, she said I was out of order just turning up, apparently I should have been referred by the midwife. Anyway she scanned me and I was 8 weeks. Good luck op, some women just bleed in pregnancy and there is never a cause found.

Thank you everyone I really appreciate the info. Forewarned is forearmed and all.
@beminetonight I would if I could, we don’t know anyone round here, no family within 60 miles, but DP is picking up DSD for the weekend. I will be fine, whatever the outcome x

Internal scan showed a thickening of the womb but unable to see a pregnancy. Just need bloods doing. The bleeding has upped itself today so I’m certain it’s a loss. Back on Monday for more bloods to confirm.
