How bad are first trimester cramps supposed to be?

Hopefully just having first trimester anxiety, but thought I should ask you guys in the hope of some reassurance!

I’m 5+2 with my first pregnancy. I’m having what I assume are normal first trimester cramps - feels like my period is due. It’s been steadily more noticeable over the past few days. No bleeding.

What’s worrying me is that I have been woken from sleep by bad lower abdo cramping over the past few nights - the first episode was SEVERE. I was dripping sweat, thought I would pass out. The other times it’s been moderate - like a toothache. Bad enough that I need to get up and sit on the toilet cos it sort of feels like a bad tummy upset? Nothing from that end though!

It lasts 15ish minutes then eases off after another 15 mins.

Is this normal?? Am I just being a wimp? If it makes a difference, I’m also constipated and have been using fybogel over the past 2 days

I had mild twinges that only lasted 5 or so minutes. Nothing really severe.

I think if you have severe cramping you should probably ring the midwife or triage just to be on the safe side.

But I’m 32 weeks now and I’ve had the odd period pain twinge all the way through. I think it’s just where everything is growing to accommodate baby

Oh God mine were HORRENDOUS. I didn't know I was pregnant, I was on holiday and I thought I had appendicitis or something.

I think it can be very normal. But get checked out if you're worried.

@IHeartKingThistle that’s so reassuring, thank you!
@SexlessBoulderBelly I’ll get onto the GP as soon as they open. I still haven’t heard from a midwife so don’t have any phone numbers to contact one! Thank you

No worries. Better go get my 12 year old appendicitis out of bed Grin

All the best Thanks

Those kind of cramps I would say are not normal. I've had them but they've always ended in miscarriage/ectopic x

Haha glad your 12 year old appendicitis is doing well!

I’ve phoned GP and they’re going to see me and send me for scan. Will keep you updated

You say your constipated and have been using fybogel over the past 2 days what are the side effects of using Fyogel?? I get bad stomach cramps if constipated so it could just be that or the effects of the stuff your using

I had really bad cramps asif I was about to have the worst period ever with my 2nd pregnancy at the beginning I didn't know I was pregnant at first but took a test later that day and it confirmed it. The pains eased off eventually. X

@boymummy3 yes I’m a bit suspicious it’s the constipation causing the problem (hopefully!) Fybogel doesn’t cause cramping like senna does, but I’m sure adding bulk to my intestines could be uncomfortable!?

Between the cramps and peeing I’m not getting any sleep! I wish I was a seahorse so my DH could deal with this instead!

Well turns out I’d haemorrhaged into my corpus luteum! No big deal, but explains the pain!

Pregnancy sac located in the womb, but no yolk sac to be seen yet - too early at 5+1 weeks! I’m booked to go back for a repeat scan next week and having some serial HCGs, but everyone was very reassuring
