I live in Malaysia which is a zika virus area - it's not something my drs here have ever mentioned or been concerned about.

Contraceptionismyfriend · 25/11/2019 11:37

Not exactly the same.
The Zika Virus was discovered in the country I was holidaying in while I was in my first trimester.

I called my MW when the news report broke when I got back home. I just got sent for more growth scans. I was a bit of a test subject. The NHS have protocol to follow.

Hello - we went on honeymoon to Vietnam and conceived the next cycle. I was only bitten once out there because I was super careful with bug spray and covering up, so not too worried.

Also, remember there are millions of women living in these countries and a very minimal number have had complications. Bit of a media storm

qwertt12 · 25/11/2019 11:40

oh it is rather similar i guess, where was you on your holiday now

how was the doctors and midwifes with you ?

it is just out of interest really as when i spoke to my doctor he kept saying to go to an area that had zika and then i said if we waited till we got back to conceive when could we and he kept saying stright away

so it seems compared to the internet the doctors dont know what they are in about / maybe less concerned ?

It's honestly not been mentioned at all, don't see it in the papers, there's no public warnings about it. I think the NHS go a bit too far with their warnings tbh, in some of the Zika areas like South America there have been outbreaks and lots of babies born with problems but Malaysia hasn't had any reported cases I don't think (yet it appears on the list).

Contraceptionismyfriend · 25/11/2019 11:49

My friend recently honeymooned in a Zika virus area and was told not to TTC until 6 months after returning.

GrumpyHoonMain · 25/11/2019 12:01

The risk of Zika / Malaria etc across a country isn’t equal. Mosquitos love warm wet stagnant places (think rivers / swamps / open sewers etc).

GrumpyHoonMain · 25/11/2019 12:02

For example I have family who have had IVF in India and Zika isn’t even considered a problem unless you are in specific areas (eg Rajesthan).

qwertt12 · 25/11/2019 12:14

its just crazy isnt it - i read 3 months for men and 2 for women if uou have been to a place with zika, its obvious not worth the risk but i often see celebs posting holidays in barbados and then announcing pregancy withing days of returning, and i just wondered about it all

OP posts:
GrumpyHoonMain · 25/11/2019 12:18

Celebs won’t be in the zika invested areas though - they’ll be in 5 star resorts where the management pays a lot of money to remove mosquitos and prevent stagnant water. Even the celebs who come from the Caribbean will often book a resort and have family come to see / stay with them there.

qwertt12 · 25/11/2019 12:27

this is true but this is also my experience of barbados haha and the holidays i go on with my family xx

I've had zika. Lived in a zika area when pregnant. No issues.

MrsHardbroom · 29/11/2019 15:20

Women who live in Zika areas have usually already had (and are immune to the infection) before pregnancy. This was the problem in Brazil a couple of years ago, Zika hadn't been the endemic there before.

Three years ago we went on honeymoon to maldives. Honeymoon baby born perfectly healthy 9months later.
