Steroids while pregnant

Hi ladies!

This is kind of a niche question.

I have Multiple Sclerosis and I am currently relapsing. Basically I just need high dose steroids.

However I am also in the middle of trying for a baby with my DH.

Has anyone any first hand
experience with steroids while pregnant?

@NakedAndAfraid

Hiya op, I have RRMS, I relapsed 6 weeks after a miscarriage and had a 5 day course of methylprednisolone, then had about a 3 month course of prednisone.

I became pregnant again about 6 weeks after my methylprednisolone, and during my 3 month course of prednisone.
I was very worried about taking them (i seem to remember the drug could cause cleft lip).

However my child was born perfectly healthy (this was 4 years ago now and no problems).

I hope this manages to ease your worry.

Good luck and I hope your relapse isn't too severe. Take care.

@ohffsanywilldo so you were still on steroids when you found you were pregnant the second time? This is quite reassuring! The cleft palette/lip threads scare the crap out of me. I'm not pregnant atm but waiting for steroids in Ireland is like waiting for rain in the Sahara 🙈 Thank you for your reply!

That is correct, I probably took them for another 6-8 weeks, although i was gradually lowering the dose after a while. Yeah ditto, I was really scared about that then on our 20 week scan we saw everything was fine and i tried to stop worrying after that. Easier said than done but the stress isn't good for MS so i did try. Not sure it did much good as I had another really bad relapse at about 7 months 😓 I'm currently pregnant again so hoping i have a better time of it this time around! Sorry it's taking so long for you get steroids 😔

I was on prednisolone from weeks 12-22 of my first pregnancy and had a healthy baby (for a different reason than yours). I think I was on about 40-50mg daily. It did give me gestational diabetes which is something to look out for.

Plenty of people having ivf are given steroids to help them get pregnant!

And we are told how our body produces enough of its own steroids during pregnancy to stave of relapses. You wouldn't know what to take on board with all of this. Thank you so much for your input. This has helped tremendously!

@welshweasel I didn't realise that being honest! I'm glad I know now, thanks! ☺️
