So I've just had my first scannwoth my second child and all does not appear to be well.
Our sonographer noticed very early on that the stomach of the foetus was not where is should be and was infact growing outside of baby between the belly and the umbilical cord. I have another scan with a doctor next week. They have tried to reasure me that as I am 11 weeks and 3 days there is still time for all to rectify itself but I cant help but worry that this is not a good sign for what is to come.

Has anyone had any experience of this? How to cope etc? What to expect ?

I have herd that with these cases children can be premature, prone to infection, have to have operations within a few hours of birth and can be in hospital for up to 4 months.

Hello
Our ds was born with an exomphalos 11 years ago. He was operated in the day after birth and came home after 13 nights in hospital. He’s a happy healthy young nearly teenager now.
DM me and I’ll point you to our parental support group - lots of us across the country. Xx

Hi OP, I had exactly this at my 12 week scan with ds2. I had to return the following day to see a consultant who confirmed that his stoamch was growing outside of his body and wasn't contained within a membrane, which apparently makes it more likely to be linked to something seriously wrong. I was then taken into a room by a specialist midwife who went through all the worst-case scenario stuff (that ds might have a genetic condition or may need surgery at birth etc.) and asked to return for another scan in 3 weeks.

It was the most stressful few weeks and I constantly feared the worst even though my screening results came back really low risk. Fortunately, at the next scan he looked completely fine and his stomach was developing as it should with nothing outside. I continued to worry throughout the whole pregnancy but the 20 week scan was all clear and he was born completely healthy. He's had absolutely no health issues since.

I have no idea what was up with his stomach but I know that the intestines normally develop on the outside and then gradually move inside the abdomen so I always wondered if his dates may have been out and he was scanned a little earlier than 12 weeks.

Hope everything works out OK for you too OP.

My neighbours child was born with her stomach outside, she had one surgery straight away and a second one a few weeks later. She's a lively 9 year old with no health problems
